FIFA 21 is another installment in the series that once again reminds us that EA should update its football simulation to FIFA 22. Instead, a full-price title is released year after year, which is more like an update than a new game.
Oh FIFA… we love you. But we hate you too. but we love you Well, you know it yourself. “The same game every year” is a phrase that can be said about FIFA for both enthusiasts and casual gamers alike. It would probably be time for EA to break new ground and change something. Competitor Konami is leading the way and released the 2021 version of PES as an update for PES 2020 . We show you 7 reasons why EA should update FIFA 21 to FIFA 22 .
1. Unfinished game as a full price title
Let’s start with the fact that EA actually pulls almost 70€ out of our pockets every year (and even more if you’re in Ultimate Team… more about that later) and sells a full-price title, which is mostly more like an update than a new game. What bothers us is that we buy a game in autumn and it only feels like after 20 patches in winter that the keepers are no longer completely lost.
2. Stop selling current gameplay as new
Yes, if you really play a lot of FIFA, you will also notice a difference in gameplay year after year. Nevertheless, EA’s marketing babble is now simply pissing us off. FIFA 18 advertised with revised dribbling , in FIFA 19 there was the Active Touch System , FIFA 20 wanted to convince with sideways dribbling and in the current FIFA 21 it is now called agile dribbling . The bottom line is: Players can dribble . Really innovative features are rarely found in the gameplay, too often they have to be patched.
3. Cancel Volta mode, we want FIFA Street
Oh how we were all looking forward to Volta mode. Well, at least briefly when we thought it was going to be like FIFA Street. But it wasn’t, so not at all . In FIFA 20, the mode struggled with many bugs and glitches at the beginning, this year you can see that it has not been further developed. On the contrary, the story has been shortened and character models taken over from the predecessor. We just want a FIFA on street courts, with over-the-top dribbling moves and a Gamebreaker finish.
4. Revise per clubs
Oh EA, you are leaving so much eSports potential here. 11 vs. 11 pro gamers competing together for your club? It sounds amazing. But eSports players have to organize themselves here, there is not enough support from EA. In general, there are simply too many bugs here year after year that are not fixed consistently and early enough.
5. Completely reinvent career mode
After years of nothing happening in FIFA career mode, we can now waste time by having players train individually (why not in teams?) or skipping through the same interviews and transfer negotiations. That doesn’t make a good career mode. The scouting system, for example, has been outdated for years and is no fun at all. Varied options and new, useful features are missing at every corner. The ability to borrow and then buy players was already in FIFA 15 and was announced as a new feature for FIFA 21 . Career mode is EA’s biggest construction site!
6. Ultimate Team needs to be fairer
Let’s get to the part of the game that is almost certainly responsible for EA’s abandonment of all other modes in the game since FIFA 09. The ultimate team gold mine. Of course you can grind until your fingers fall off and then have a team that is half as good as someone who invests real money – but who wants that? How cool would be the option to be able to choose from the 20-30 best players in FUT in the Weekend League – in order to at least create equal opportunities and attribute a higher value to the skill. By the way, the sales figures that EA earns with Ultimate Team are just mind-blowing!
7. Back up licenses
But apparently less and less is being reinvested. Now that you have to do without another team from Serie A in FIFA 22 , we are already asking ourselves: where is this going to lead? For decades, FIFA stood out from its main competitor PES not only because of the gameplay, but above all because you could present all the original player and club names. With the way things are going right now, we’re just waiting for Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to become Semmi and Noraldo . Ok, that was a bit cynical, but still: As a FIFA player, you also have to do without the upcoming European Championship. Konami also struck here. Of course there is the option to create your own tournament and then… no, not really.
So EA: Simply update jerseys and transfers for one or even two – Season s and then offer us a completely renewed game… that unfortunately remains a dream. Because everyone (yes, me too) wants the latest FIFA in the fall. So the conflict between “Hey EA, do it better” and “I’ll buy the new FIFA anyway” remains. We are excited to see what the future will bring. Perhaps a seemingly ever-increasing PES is putting pressure on EA.

What could be cooler than just relaxed gaming and doing some sofa sports on the side? In FIFA 22, the player is on the move fast, but without getting sore muscles. With the Ultimate Team Event cards, the collecting instinct is now also satisfied. Admittedly, the FUT heroes will cost quite a bit of coin, but it turns out that EA has once again brought some top-class players into the game when it comes to selection. As a collector and hunter, it’s an added attraction for FIFA gamers to now include their own favorite heroes in the portfolio and benefit from their individual skills. Both in the game and in team building, the FUTs will revolutionize the game once again.
EA SPORTS FC: FIFA GAME SERIES TO BE CONTINUED UNDER NEW NAME
Of course, the soccer simulation game series will not be discontinued completely. After FIFA 23, EA will relaunch the game under the name EA Sports FC and market it independently. Old FIFA hares should now become quite an ear, after all, the EA Sports Football Club used to be a part of the actual game for years. A lot of playing was rewarded, points could be collected and items, boosts or balls for the individual game modes could be unlocked.
In this context, there could also be a complete revolution of the classic game. There is a heated discussion in the FIFA community about whether the game, which is expected to be released in the fall of 2023, will be free-to-play. This option is said to be on the table for the game makers from EA, because: It seems that EA earns most of its money with the purchases of FIFA Points in the game mode Ultimate Team and not with the sale of the game itself.
