Riot Games continues the series of updates with Patch 10.9, which includes the long-awaited FPX skins, drastic changes to Sanguine Blade and some much-needed nerfs. Well then, let’s get started!
We mentioned in our previous article that Karthus would need some adjustments because his impact on the Summoner’s Rift is overwhelming. Riot Games has now listened to the loud crying of all junglers and players.
Karthus wreaks havoc in the jungle, so we weaken him. We limit his ability to move quickly across the map, but make sure that Karthus suffers as little as possible in the middle lane.
Buffs from Patch 10.9
On patch 10.9, a wide range of champions have been buffed, namely:
- Cho’Gath
- Fiddlesticks
- Gnar
- Kayn
- Lissandra
- Quinn
Out of all these champs, Gnar is a must-pick for the top lane in patch 10.9, and Riot Games is taking the little guy’s bruiser potential to the max. His Q, Boulder Toss, now refunds 70% of its cooldown if you manage to pick it back up. Gnar’s E Crunch has also increased its damage significantly, from 50/85/120/155/190 to 80/115/150/185/220 per level.
A notable mention and another champion to keep an eye on in patch 10.9 is Quinn. She will blend very well with the new Sanguine Blade changes, making her another excellent choice for the top lane. Considering that most of the attention has been on the Meele toplane, it’s nice to see that this bird lady is now getting some attention as well.
Nerfs from Patch 10.9
Since balance needs to be maintained, Riot Games has generated some champions that proved to be quite OP, among them are:
- Bard
- Carthus
- Nami
- Trundle
- Wukong
Wukong still needs to be adjusted, because the changes that came with the rework are still too overpowered. Especially when you played against him and he got a bit in front, the monkey was almost unstoppable. By reducing his armor from 34 to 31, it will now be more possible to do significant damage to Wunkong as well. His Q, Devastating Blow, has been nerfed. The same goes for his W, Warrior Trickster. We hope that the monkey will behave a bit more in this patch 10.9.
We noticed that players quickly (and effectively) took advantage of Wukong’s rework. So we’re making one more tweak to rein the monkey back in.
What’s not clear to us concerns the changes to Trundle. He’s not a high priority, even in competitive, but Riot Games sees things we don’t. They’ve added an extended cooldown to his ultimate ability, Subdue, to prevent him from targeting more vulnerable champions.
Item Change: Sanguine Blade
Sanguine Blade has changed and will have a significant impact on the meta after League of Legends Patch 10.9. Its total cost has been reduced by 100 gold and its attack damage has been increased to make it more attractive for purchase.
Quinn will benefit from this change, so we strongly recommend including Sanguine Blade in the next builds in-game, should you choose the bird heroine.

League of Legends Patch 10.9 finally sees some more tweaks for Wukong, who proved to be unbearable in the jungle. Karthu’s changes are a very welcome addition, as his impact was good in the “abnormal” gap. Gnar and Quinn could now be picked more often due to the changes, and Sanguine Blade has become a much more interesting item overall for Quinn to do more damage against melee champions in the toplane.
