Private (Corporal in Call of Duty: World at War: Final Fronts, later even promoted) Joe Polonsky was a young member of the Marine Raiders in World War II. He was assigned to the First Division of Marines and fought under the command of Sergeant Sullivan and Corporal Roebuck.
History
Polonsky was a young Marine and was still under the command of Sergeant Sullivan during Mission Little Resistance, but for the rest of the game he went by Donald Roebuck. Roebuck describes him and the rest of the team as newcomers, just having their first mission on Makin Atoll, while he himself, Private Miller and Sergeant Sullivan are already old hands, although none of them is over 30. Polonsky is first seen in the landing craft that takes Miller and the others to Peleliu. He and the other Marines fight their way through Japanese counterattacks on the beach in preparation for an allied attack. At the end of the mission, however, Sullivan is stabbed by a Japanese banzai warrior. Polonsky and the others kill Sullivan’s killer, but it is too late. After Roebuck is promoted to sergeant, the team is to take the airport on the island. On the way, the squad sees a plane that has been shot down, but when they try to find the pilot, they notice that the plane has been booby-trapped, which disgusts Polonsky quite a bit. Capturing the airport does not cause them the biggest problem, however they have to withstand an assault by the Japanese until allies attack with the planes. Polonsky stays with his troops and takes the rest of Peleliu, followed later by Okinawa. After a fierce attack on a cliff, Polonsky complains to Major Gordon that the Marines are short of supplies while Miller and Roebuck load wounded onto a truck, but he is unsuccessful. In the final American mission in Call of Duty: World at War, Polonsky and the others attack Shuri Castle, where a group of Japanese surrender, but this is just a ruse. When Polonsky isn’t paying attention for a moment, he is attacked by one. Doing nothing to save Roebuck, its attacker explodes a grenade by his head, sending himself to the afterlife as well, but Polonsky loses his temper and shoots the remaining Japanese with his M1 Garand. At the end of the mission, Polonsky hands Roebuck’s badge to Miller, while Roebuck himself describes the level’s exit in the background. If you save Roebuck, Polonsky dies from the grenade, however, the rest of the mission then proceeds the same.
Polonsky supports the player throughout the campaign and is known for his witty sayings. If he is in range and the player should be careless, he usually gives him covering fire. Banzai warriors are also no problem for Polonsky, as he either finishes them off with the end of his rifle or knocks them to the ground and then shoots them at close range. He almost always carries his beloved M1 Garand and seems to be quite a good shot with the rifle as well.

• Polonsky doesn’t seem particularly close to Sergeant Sullivan until the end of the mission, when he is stabbed.
• He has similarities to the PFC Reiben from the movie Saving Private Ryan.
• Polonsky is from New York, as can be seen from several sayings.
• The character model for Tank Dempsey was simply copied from Joe Polonsky.
• When the player achieves a multi-launch in multiplayer and then calls a launch series, he can hear Polonsky.

• Polonsky starts each mission with a helmet, but by the end it has usually been shot off his head again.
• If Polonsky dies without a helmet, he wears it again in the next cutscene.
• Polonsky wears much less equipment than other Marines in the game, as he has no combat vest, embroidery or ammo belt, only his M1 Garand.
• Should you manage to save both Roebuck and Polonsky, Roebuck reacts as if Polonsky had died, while the latter stands still for the rest of the assault on Shuri Castle.
• In the mission where Polonsky can also die, he complains that he is running out of ammunition, to which Roebuck replies that he should take an enemy’s gun. Despite this, Polonsky goes through the entire level with his M1 Garand without swapping it. When he dies and you take his M1 Garand, there are still around 50 bullets in the gun. Rarely, but sometimes he uses his M1911 later in the mission.
