Khaled Al-Asad was a military officer and side antagonist from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. In the first Act of the campaign he was still portrayed as the worst villain, after that Imran Zakhaev takes over this role in the last two acts.
History
Execution of Al-Fulani
As one of the so-called “Four Horsemen,” Khaled Al-Asad was responsible for the execution of President Yasir Al-Fulani, who was accused of supporting Western countries because of his own interests. Al-Fulani was tracked down by Al-Asad’s forces, taken by car to the arena, and shot there by Al-Asad himself…on live national television.
The hunt
Al-Asad was given power in his country, but in the eyes of the United States, this position was a threat to the entire political state of affairs in the Middle East. The government sent troops into the country, including Marines, to capture the power-hungry commander. The Marines meet brutal resistance from the OpFor until they discover that Al-Asad is broadcasting a television program from a television studio. Once there, however, the broadcast turns out to be a recording and Al-Asad has fled to an unknown location.
The U.S. military suspects that Al-Asad is hiding in the capital, so without delay hundreds of attack helicopters, transport helicopters, tanks and soldiers are dispatched to secure the capital. Al-Asad himself is not present, but the Americans discover a Russian-made nuclear warhead in his palace. Special operations teams still try to defuse the bomb, but Al-Asad detonates it on the orders of Vladimir Makarov, causing at least 30,000 American soldiers and countless civilians to lose their lives. Among the casualties are Sergeant Paul Jackson, Lieutenant Volker, Captain “Deadly” Pelayo, and Lieutenant Vasquez.
Death
Nikolai, a Russian informant for the SAS, reveals that Al-Asad is in hiding in Azerbaijan and is being protected by Russian ultranationalists. Captain Price, Gaz, Soap and other members of the SAS head to the town where Al-Asad is hiding, assisted by a Russian loyalist sent by Kamarov. Shortly thereafter, Al-Asad is captured. Price ties the commander to a chair to interrogate him, but after the interrogation he shoots him in the face with his M1911. After the death of the enemy, the United States realizes that all the planning and effort was actually behind Imran Zakhaev, who wanted to divert U.S. attention away from himself to make sure he could win the civil war in his country.
Al-Asad’s army – the OpFor
Al-Asad’s army uses mostly weapons of Russian origin, for example the AK-47, AK-74u and the
RPG-7. However, they also use the German G3 assault rifle and the Russian-designed BMP-2, T-72 and Mi-24 vehicles. Most likely, the ultra-nationalists supply them with this equipment. The army appears only in the prologue and act 1 of the campaign, after that they are replaced by the ultranationalists. There are several possibilities, maybe all members of the OpFor were killed, maybe some survived and joined the Ultranationalists.
In the sequel Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, a faction called OpFor also briefly appears in the Team Player mission, but it is very unlikely that it is the same faction. There are some differences.
• The mission is set in Afghanistan during the war, so it’s possible that Infinity Ward simply reused the character models, audio tracks, and weapons out of precautionary measures to avoid upsetting any serious faction in Afghanistan. Since the OpFor are also from the East, it’s hard to tell the difference.
• The OpFor in the Afghan city seem much more civilized, as they don’t wear as much armor or use armored vehicles.

• The name Khaled Al-Asad means “The Immortal Lion” in Arabic. Khaled in this case is “immortal” and Al-Asad is “the lion”.
• In multiplayer, Al-Asad is the announcer for the OpFor.
• In the mission just mentioned in Modern Warfare 2, a picture of Al-Asad was painted on the wall on the right side as you drive through the streets.
• In Modern Warfare 2, you can unlock an image of his head as an emblem for your player card.
• Originally, his name was supposed to be Al-Assad, which you can also see in files for cut missions. However, this was changed in time, as this is also the name of a real dictator from the East.
