Heroes (Dota 2)
The heroines and heroes (original: “Heroes”) are the primary playable entities in DotA and Dota 2. In a game, each player takes control of one of the 112 playable heroines and heroes. Each hero and heroine is a character with different attributes, abilities and roles. Each heroine and hero can also be categorized by the default attacks, which happen either in melee or ranged attacks.
Valve plans to develop their own heroines and heroes for Dota 2 after the release of the classic heroines and heroes from DotA Allstars, as Erik Johnson previously announced in a 2014 interview. After the release of Arc Warden in December 2015 and that of Underlord in August 2016, the first hero developed exclusively for Dota 2, Monkey King, appeared in winter 2016, although it was at least based on concepts from classic DotA and appeared there as an event boss opponent. The Dueling Fates update announced in August 2017 confirmed the release of two completely redesigned heroes.
Bristleback: “I cut quite a figure, don’t I.”
Rigwarl, the Bristleback, is a strength hero from DotA and Dota 2. The melee Bristleback belongs to the Radiant. In the game, he can take on the role of a Durabler, Initiator and Disabler. Bristleback’s abilities are well-matched, require little mana and have a very low cooldown. This allows him to use them well in combination with each other. Through Viscous Nasal Goo, Bristleback can slow down enemies and reduce their armor. This effect can be amplified by using it multiple times, extending the duration of the slowdown and increasing the reduction of armor. If one possesses Aghanim’s Scepter, the ability is even applied to all surrounding enemies. Also adding up is the Quill Spray ability, which deals a higher amount of damage with each application, provided the affected unit had already been wounded with Quill Spray in the previous 10 seconds. With his eponymous ability Bristleback, he can better protect himself passively and permanently against attacks from behind and from the side. When Bristleback receives a damage of 230 from behind with the ability, he automatically shoots a charge of Quill Spray of the current level. Bristleback’s Ultimate Warpath also works passively, granting him increased movement speed and damage from any ability he casts. The effect can be added up at times.

When it comes to fighting, Bristleback especially likes to turn his back on his opponents. Because he takes little damage from behind and the sides, he can rush into battle without thinking much and bombard his enemies with spikes or nose slime.

“Rigwarl wasn’t exactly one to run from a fight. He was known to take on the biggest, meanest thugs he could muster. He gained the approval of the drunken hordes by instigating backroom brawls in every tavern between Slom and Elze, until his debauchery eventually caught the attention of an innkeeper looking for a bouncer. Bristleback was hired for a bit of brew to collect outstanding bills, keep the peace, and occasionally break a leg or two (or five, in the case of one unfortunate web dog). After a night of wallowing in merriment while the two carousing guests, as well as his liver, took equal hits, he finally met his match. ‘I don’t like your tusks, sir,’ he was heard drunkenly slurring to an exceptionally large fellow from the Northern Wastes whose bill had just come due. A fight for the history books ensued. A dozen fighters jumped in. No stool was left unbroken and in the end the impossible happened: The bill went unpaid. In the weeks that followed, Bristleback’s wounds healed and his spines grew back; but a bouncer’s honor is very fragile. He paid the bill out of his own pocket and vowed to track down the Northman and pay off the debt. And then he did something he had never done before, he trained. And in doing so, he made a startling observation about himself. A grin pulled from his teeth as he set up his spikes. Turning his back on a fight didn’t seem so bad after all.”
