The blade of darkness crawls out of its juggernaut and terrorizes the toplane. Aatrox definitely offers carry potential if you know a bit about the combo mechanics. In the right matchups, he becomes a beast and dominates the entire game.
Aatrox’s Playstyle
Pay attention to the passives
Aatrox Passive gives him bonus Attack Range and damage, heals, and triggers on-hit effects. The healing is probably the most important aspect of this, though the extra range shouldn’t be ignored either, especially when it comes to poke on the lane.
The most important thing about the passive, though, is that you can always lower the cooldown. Every time you hit an ability or autoattack on a champion with Aatrox, or, when you get into the stronger range of Q, the cooldown decreases. And more passives, means more healing!
Combo time for maximum CC
The order of Aatrox abilities regularly ties us in knots. The most important abilities in the kit are Q and E, both of which come with multiple instances. Especially in the early game, be careful not to use the E too offensively, lest you be vulnerable to ganks when it’s on cooldown. For more DPS, you can use the E as an autoattack reset.
To be an early-game bully, you should have the right combination of Aatrox skills on the lane. Basic rule: if you miss the first two Q instances, stay calm, retreat, and try again next time. However, as soon as one hits and knocks the opponent up, immediately put your W under it and try to follow up with the next knock up. Here, with a little practice, you can cancel the animation and massively increase your speed!
Rush Squishy Champs
Aatrox is a fighter who, in the later stages of the game, is designed to keep himself alive through his massive healing bonuses from items, abilities, and runes. He’s especially strong at levels 9 and 13 if you maximize Q first, then E. Still, you won’t last much in frontline combat if damage is coming from behind at the same time.
So we recommend elegant teleport options and sneaking up on the Carrys from the side once in a while. Because once you’re in range, you’ll cause carnage, that’s for sure.
