Valorant Patch 2.06 is the latest Valorant patch and along with many changes the Head Related Transfer Function aka HRTF has been added. What is this and should you turn it on?
If you haven’t read the full Valorant 2.06 patch notes yet, you should urgently do so! In addition to the long overdue Viper buffs, players finally get the official introduction of HRTF…. What the hell is that supposed to be? Don’t worry, we’ll explain it to you.
What is Valorant HRTF?
The short answer is Head Related Transfer Function. Of course, nobody can do anything with that, right? Admit it, you also thought it was some fancy business term or something. Here’s the explanation:
A Head Related Transfer Function, sometimes called an Anatomical Transfer Function, is a response that characterizes how an ear receives a sound from a particular point in space.
We haven’t understood it that way yet either, so here’s the explanation again for dorks: In gaming terms, it means that HRTF turns your headphones into a 3D audio space. This makes it easier to assign a sound to a certain direction and distance.
In simpler terms, with HRTF enabled in Valorant, you’ll be able to spot the position of your opponents more easily. However, the introduction of HRTF in Valorant does not come as a complete surprise. It was accidentally released back in October 2020.
Should you enable HRTF in Valorant?
Ultimately, it comes down to two things:
- Do you use headphones or not
- Personal preference

Keep in mind, however, that Valorant HRTF currently only works for steps, reloads, and deathmatch respawns. HRTF is a feature in many other FPS titles and accordingly, it’s surprising that Valorant has taken so long to implement it.

What is Valorant?
Valorant initially appears to be a cross between CS:Go and Overwatch . A competitive shooter where two small teams compete against each other.
Your team is either ready to attack or defend, with the attackers placing a “stinger” (essentially a bomb) that the other team must then defuse or preferably prevent you from placing at all.
The attacking team can win by either eliminating the defenders or placing the stinger and then protecting it from defusing until the timer runs out. The defenders can similarly win by destroying the attackers before they have a chance to plant their stinger, or disarming the stinger after it has been planted.
Each team of five can play as both attackers and defenders during a game. Each game has a total of 25 rounds, with the first team to win 13 rounds declared the winner
