With the recently released major Arena update for Pokémon GO, Niantic has unlocked Raids as a PvE feature for larger groups of players for the first time. How these raids work and what rewards await you there, you can read here in our guide.
Raids as a co-op feature for larger groups of players belong in every important MMO – that’s probably what Niantic thought when the developers of Pokémon GO realized the wishes of many players with the last major update and implemented mass battles against particularly strong monsters into the game. But how exactly these raids work, we explain to you now – based on the explanations of the official Niantic blog.
Pokémon GO: Find a Raid and Join the Raid Group
Before you can participate in a raid, you must first find the corresponding battle and join a raid group. Here’s how it works:
A Raid is created by a powerful Pokémon taking over an arena. Then an egg appears above the arena and the game displays a countdown, after which a Pokémon hatches from the egg and the Raid begins.
- Raids in Pokémon GO are supposed to take place “regularly” according to Niantic – what exactly is meant by that and in which time intervals the raids actually take place is currently still unclear.
- As soon as a raid takes place near you, Pokémon GO will notify you.
- You can also use the “near you” feature to display raids in your area instead.
- To join a raid, you need a raid pass. You can either buy one in the store or get one for free at an arena by spinning the photo disc there. You can only have one raid pass in your inventory at a time. Once you have used up the free pass, you can buy more passes in the store.
Pokémon GO: Difficulty levels and battle system
When you want to join a raid, you select the appropriate raid and apply your Raid Pass. Similar to an arena battle, you then decide on six Pokémon to support you in the raid. If you want to join the raid with friends, share the group code with them, which is displayed in the Pokémon selection screen in the upper right corner.
- Raids have a total of five difficulty levels. The higher the difficulty level, the more players you will need to defeat the raid boss.
- You must defeat the boss within a certain time limit. If you don’t succeed, you can try again after the fight – you don’t need another raid pass.
- Once the fight has begun, you have three different action options: fast attack, charged attack, and dodge.
- To use the fast attack, tap the screen once. This attack charges up a meter that you need for the charged attack.
- Once your charged attack meter is filled, tap and hold the screen to perform a charged attack and deal a large amount of damage.
- To dodge a raid boss attack, swipe left or right on the screen.
- While the raid is active, you can flee the battle at any time to heal your Pokémon. Afterwards, you can rejoin the raid.
Pokémon GO: Raid Rewards
If you manage to defeat the boss, you will get a chance to catch the corresponding Pokémon. You will also get some of the following items as rewards:
- Golden Sky Berries
- Fast and charged TMs
- Rare and mysterious candies
- Premier Pokéballs
“Premier Pokéballs” are given to you based on your performance in the raid after you defeat the raid boss. They disappear from your inventory after the raid is completed. You can only use Premier Pokéballs to catch the Raid Pokémon. Also, you can apply Berries. Once your supply of Premier Balls is exhausted, the Pokémon will automatically flee. Once you have defeated the raid boss, you will have to wait until the raid is completely finished before you can interact with the arena again.

Pokémon Go is the mobile spin-off of Nintendo’s popular Pokémon game series for Android and iOS. It is a so-called “location-based game”, i.e. a game that uses the player’s immediate surroundings. It is based on the principle of augmented reality.
Pokémon Map: Between landmarks and sights
Pokémon Go uses a Global Positioning System (GPS) to determine the player’s location and displays it on a map that also represents the playing field. The map is based on OpenStreetMap maps. The game is played mostly outdoors and uses landmarks, landmarks and other notable or eye-catching objects in the world to position either PokéStops or arenas there for you to battle for supremacy. Join either Team Intuition (Team Yellow, Zapdos), Team Wisdom (Team Blue, Arktos), or Team Daring (Team Red, Lavados). Under their flag you can then fight for the arenas, which are placed at hotspots like churches or similar. Pokémon can appear anywhere, though.
Pocket monsters visible on the Pokémon Go Map are randomly loaded into the game’s virtual map by the game server. If several players are playing in the same location, each player can see and catch the Pokémon independently of the others.
Pokémon Go Updates, News, Raids and More
The developers at Niantic regularly provide Pokémon Go with new updates or special raids that should only be tackled in a group of several people. The Pokémon Go Raids are therefore very popular, as they also offer the prospect of particularly rare Pokémon. For example, in the past, legendary Pokémon could always be caught on special occasions (Pokémon Go events).
