Lugia is back in Pokémon Go’s Tier 5 Raids. The last appearance of the legendary Psycho and Flying Pokémon in Niantic’s game was just under a year ago, and since then a lot has changed in terms of the best fighters you can lead into battle against the Pokémon. We have therefore updated our counter guide for Lugia in Pokémon Go.

Update from October 27, 2020: As the makers of Pokémon Go announce, Lugia will once again do the honors in the Tier 5 Raids in November 2020; more precisely, from November 6, 2020 in the morning hours until November 16, 2020 at 10:00 pm. After that, you can enjoy the Knights of Integrity Kobalium, Viridium, and Terrakium with the Raidspawns on the following November 17, 2020. Since Lugia’s last appearance in the raids, a lot has happened in the game landscape, which is why we have updated our counter guide for Lugia in Pokémon Go below. We wish you good luck and lots of fun hunting for the legendary pocket monster! Note: We have refrained from including expensive to level Crypto Pokémon in the list.

Pokémon Go: Current best counters for Lugia

  • Mega Gengar with Licker and Spookball
  • Mega-Dogemon with tirade and parasite
  • Zekrom with charge beam and surge
  • Darkrai with Standpauke and Finsteraura
  • Giratina (original form) with shadow claw and spookball
  • Raikou with volt change and surge
  • Rihornior with catapult and rock thrower
  • Snibunna with tirade and avalanche
  • Magnezone with spark jump and surge
  • Elevoltek with thunder shock and surge
  • Rameidon with catapult and hail of stones
  • Skelabra with burden and haunted ball

Original news on December 21, 2019: Periodically, not only brand-new Pokémon in Pokémon Go come to the Tier 5 Raids that can start at the arenas of Niantic’s hit game, but also old familiar faces. For example, from 10 p.m. on December 20, 2019, until 10 p.m. on December 23, 2019, it looks like the legendary Pokémon Lugia will be sharing the Tier 5 arenas with Ho-Oh and Viridium during the event period. If you want to face Lugia, we’ll give you tips on the battle in our countering guide!

Pokémon Go: Lugia as Raid Boss

Lugia is a legendary Pokémon of the 2nd game generation, has 45,925 CP as a raid boss and belongs to the types Flight and Psycho. Accordingly, Pocket Monsters with Electric and Rock type attacks, as well as Unlight, are good to use against Lugia. In windy weather, Lugia is boosted and then almost all of its possible skills do more damage to your attackers. Lugia’s possible skills include Special Sensor (Psycho/Instant Attack), Dragon Rod (Dragon/Instant Attack), Seer (Psycho/Charging Attack), Sky Sweeper (Flight/Charging Attack), and Hydro Pump (Water/Charging Attack).

On the other hand, it is advantageous for you to attack when it is partly cloudy, because then rock attacks are improved. Or, if you dare to attack Lugia when it’s raining, all of your Mon’s very effective Electric attacks will be boosted – but beware, because Lugia’s Charge Attack Hydro Pump will also cause more damage, if Lugia has the skill. Of course, if you want to catch a level 25 Lugia, you can’t avoid attacking in windy weather. Lugia takes very effective damage from Electric, Unlight, Ice, Spirit and Rock, so according to the authors of Pokémon Go Hub, it’s best to use the following attackers:

  • Darkrai with tirade and spookball
  • Magnezone with spark jump and surge
  • Despotar with bite and stone edge
  • Raikou with Thunder Shock and Surge
  • Giratina (original form) with dark claw and spookball
  • Snibunna with tirade and avalanche
  • Zapdos with thunder shock and thunder lightning
  • Trikephalo with bite and dark aura
  • Elevoltek with Thunder Shock and Surge
  • Mewtu with Psycho Blade and Spook Ball

Furthermore you can fill up your team with the following counters:

  • Luxtra with Spark Jump and Surge
  • Mamutel with Powder Snow and Avalanche
  • Rameidon with Catapult and Steihagel
  • ALoLa Geowaz with Stone Throw and Surge
  • Rihornior with Catapult and Stone Edge

Pokémon Go: Catch Lugia

If you have successfully completed the battle against Lugia and have the chance to banish the pocket monster into your Pokéball, then Lugia has 2,115 CP at level 20 with 100% IV values. If Lugia is boosted to level 25 in windy weather, then it has 2,645 CP at perfect 100% IV values. Lugia can also be caught as a Shiny. We wish you good luck in the hunt!

Pokémon GO

Pokémon Go is the mobile spin-off of Nintendo’s popular Pokémon game series for Android and iOS. It is a so-called “location-based game”, i.e. a game that uses the player’s immediate surroundings. It is based on the principle of augmented reality.

Pokémon Map: Between landmarks and sights

Pokémon Go uses a Global Positioning System (GPS) to determine the player’s location and displays it on a map that also represents the playing field. The map is based on OpenStreetMap maps. The game is played mostly outdoors and uses landmarks, landmarks and other notable or eye-catching objects in the world to position either PokéStops or arenas there for you to battle for supremacy. Join either Team Intuition (Team Yellow, Zapdos), Team Wisdom (Team Blue, Arktos), or Team Daring (Team Red, Lavados). Under their flag you can then fight for the arenas, which are placed at hotspots like churches or similar. Pokémon can appear anywhere, though.

Pocket monsters visible on the Pokémon Go Map are randomly loaded into the game’s virtual map by the game server. If several players are playing in the same location, each player can see and catch the Pokémon independently of the others.

Pokémon Go Updates, News, Raids and More

The developers at Niantic regularly provide Pokémon Go with new updates or special raids that should only be tackled in a group of several people. The Pokémon Go Raids are therefore very popular, as they also offer the prospect of particularly rare Pokémon. For example, in the past, legendary Pokémon could always be caught on special occasions (Pokémon Go events). For particularly eager mobile or smartphone Pokémon trainers, there is also an external IV calculator, such as the online tool from Pokemon.gameinfo.io or on Pokefans.net, to check the values of your Pokémon.
