PoGO – Pokémon GO: Maxax in the meta - all info on the dragon mon (guide)
THOSE: NIANTIC

Trainers have been able to get their hands on a new fifth-generation dragon Pokémon in Pokémon GO since January 2020, namely Maxax. In our guide, we explain what the mon can do and why you shouldn’t miss it.

The release of a new dragon Pokémon in Pokémon GO usually guarantees plenty of fuel for extensive discussions about the meta of the mobile game. Maxax, a new fifth-generation dragon Pokémon that has been in Pokémon GO since January 2020, is no exception.

Maxax comes with a lot of interesting stats and abilities, which help him to have a great influence on the Pokémon GO meta. We’ll now explain why, based on an article from Pokémon Go Hub.

Maxax in Pokémon GO – General Info

To get Maxax at all, you currently have to evolve it from Scharfax, which you in turn evolve from Milza. Milza hatches with a very low probability from 10km eggs – so you need luck and patience to be able to add Maxax to your Pokémon collection at all. But it’s worth the effort:

  • Maxax has a maximum CP of 3,593 at level 40, and it also has 284 attack, 172 defense, and 183 CP.
  • Because it belongs to the Dragon monotype, it has fewer weaknesses than many other Dragon Pokémon, which often have a second type.
  • Because of its monotype, Maxax resists Plant, Fire, Water, and Electric type attacks, and thus all of the original starter Pokémon types.

Maxax in the Meta – The Movepool

Maxax can access the following movepool in Pokémon GO:

  • Dragon Rod (normal attack of type Dragon).
  • Counter (normal attack of the type fight)
  • Dragon Claw (charge attack of type dragon)
  • Earthquake (charge attack of the ground type)
  • Surfer (water type charge attack)
  • Night Strike (Unlight type charge attack)

The moveset of choice for Maxax consists of the two dragon attacks Dragon Rod and Dragon Claw. Counter works as a solid combat attack, as does Surfer, while Maxax probably won’t get to use Earthquake. Trainers should eventually leave Night Strike completely to the left because the attack doesn’t have enough damage potential.

Dragon Claw, however, doesn’t fully exploit Maxax’s attack potential. Pokémon Go Hub’s editorial team is therefore hoping for a future Community Day with Milza, where an evolved Maxax could receive the powerful attack Rage Attack. Maxax could then cause more DPS with Rage Attack than any other non-legendary, non-mega evolved Dragon Pokémon – a significant boost for Maxax considering the general strength of Dragon Pokémon in the meta.

Maxax in the Meta – Comparison with Rayquaza

Maxax’s stats are very similar to those of the Dragon Pokémon Rayquaza. Both Pokémon have the same attack stats, while Maxax’s defense is even two points higher than Rayquaza’s. The only difference is Maxax’s KP. Only in terms of KP does Maxax draw the short straw.

The key advantage Maxax has over Rayquaza is Maxax’s monotype: Rayquaza, as a dual-type Pokémon, takes more damage from Rock and Ice attacks. In contrast, Maxax is not sensitive to Rock attacks and only takes double damage from Ice attacks instead of quadruple.

Maxax in the Meta – PvP (Master League) and PvE (Raids and Arenas)

PvP battles are not always successful with Maxax: Although the Dragon Pokémon does not suffer quadruple damage from any attack like many dual-type Dragon Pokémon. However, due to its low HP, it cannot sufficiently withstand the particularly effective attacks of Dragon counters like Togekiss or Mamutel. In addition, Maxax’s attacks only cause enough damage if your opponent has already used up both of its shields.

Maxax, on the other hand, scores well in PvE: thanks to its high attack power, the dragon Pokémon clears arenas in no time. In Raids, Maxax is also a tough attacker with Dragon Rod and Dragon Claw, and its monotype and the general strength of Dragon Pokémon make it an excellent choice for various Raid battles, and it should take a well-deserved place on your regular Raid team.

All in all, don’t miss out on Maxax if you’re building your Dragon Counter team for Raids and Arenas. In PvE, Maxax is already one of the top contenders for such a position – and with an attack like Rage, it could even surpass Brutalanda in the future.

Pokémon GO

Pokémon Go is the mobile spin-off of Nintendo’s popular Pokémon game series for Android and iOS. It is a so-called “location-based game”, i.e. a game that uses the player’s immediate surroundings. It is based on the principle of augmented reality.

Pokémon Map: Between landmarks and sights

Pokémon Go uses a Global Positioning System (GPS) to determine the player’s location and displays it on a map that also represents the playing field. The map is based on OpenStreetMap maps. The game is played mostly outdoors and uses landmarks, landmarks and other notable or eye-catching objects in the world to position either PokéStops or arenas there for you to battle for supremacy. Join either Team Intuition (Team Yellow, Zapdos), Team Wisdom (Team Blue, Arktos), or Team Daring (Team Red, Lavados). Under their flag you can then fight for the arenas, which are placed at hotspots like churches or similar. Pokémon can appear anywhere, though.

Pocket monsters visible on the Pokémon Go Map are randomly loaded into the game’s virtual map by the game server. If several players are playing in the same location, each player can see and catch the Pokémon independently of the others.

Pokémon Go Updates, News, Raids and More

The developers at Niantic regularly provide Pokémon Go with new updates or special raids that should only be tackled in a group of several people. The Pokémon Go Raids are therefore very popular, as they also offer the prospect of particularly rare Pokémon. For example, in the past, legendary Pokémon could always be caught on special occasions (Pokémon Go events). For particularly eager mobile or smartphone Pokémon trainers, there is also an external IV calculator, such as the online tool from Pokemon.gameinfo.io or on Pokefans.net, to check the values of your Pokémon.
