Pokémon trainers, take note: Niantic has come up with a special event for March 01, 2020, during which you can catch Gengar and Nidorino with Party Hats in Tier 4 and Tier 2 Raids, respectively. We tell you in our guide how to counter the two Pokémon of the first generation.

Update, March 01, 2020: In a previous version, we claimed that the raid event with Party Hat Gargar and Nidorino would take place on February 29, 2020. This statement is not true, we made a mistake here. The event will take place on March 01, 2020 from 2pm to 5pm local time. We apologize for the mistake and the confusion caused!

Original message: February 27, 2020 is the date of the worldwide Pokémon Day. Niantic is taking this date as an opportunity to feature the two Pokémon Gengar and Nidorino as raid bosses on March 01, 2020 in memory of the start screen of Pokémon Red and Fire Red/Leaf Green. In doing so, the two Pokémon will wear small party hats on their heads in keeping with the festivities.

Players will receive five free Raid Passes for the event, which will take place on March 01, 2020, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. local time. Gengar can be found in Tier 4 Raids, while Nidorino can be found in Tier 2 Raids. Both Pokémon are also available as Shiny variants with party hats. To make your hunt for the two Pokémon as successful as possible, we have summarized the most important tips for you in a short guide to the event based on an article from Pokemongohub.

Party Hat Nidorino in Tier 2 Raids: The Best Counters

Nidorino has little to oppose you as a Tier 2 boss. You can easily defeat the Pokémon, which has a Raid WP value of 7238 points, single-handedly. Nidorino is particularly sensitive to Ground and Psycho type attacks. So just rely on a team of Ground and Psycho Pokémon with appropriate attacks that have an adequate level (30), and you should have no trouble defeating Nidorino quickly. Candidates are, for example: Mewtu, Rotomurf, Rihornior, Groudon, Psiana and Deoxys.

Nidorino has the following WP points when you catch it:

  • 743 to 796 without weather boost
  • 929 to 995 with weather boost (cloudy weather)
  • By the way: Both the normal purple Nidorino and the blue Shiny Nidorino wear a party hat during the event.

Party Hat Gargar in Tier 4 Raids – The Best Counters

While you should have an easy time with Nidorino, you’ll have to work a little harder with Gengar – although with the right preparation and the support of one or two other players, you can also defeat the Spirit Pokémon fairly quickly. Gengar has 33531 Raid HP and, as a dual-type Spirit/Poison Pokémon, is sensitive to Unlight, Spirit, Ground, and Psycho attacks.

Gengar himself can use the following attack combinations in the raid:

  • Dark Claw (normal attack, spirit type) and Haunted Ball (charge attack, spirit type).
  • Burden (normal attack, type spirit) and Mud Bomb (charge attack, type poison)
  • Low Blow (normal attack, type Unlight) and Focus Blow (type Combat)

You have the least to fear from Deep Strike and Mud Bomb, but beware of Burden and Haunted Ball. The latter can still hurt even your best counterattacks. To ensure that you still come out on top, it’s best to use a team of the following Pokémon to fight Gengar:

  • Mewtu (Psycho type) with Confusion and Psyblast or Psychokinesis.
  • Giratina Urform (Type Psycho) with Dark Claw and Spookball
  • Darkrai (type Unlight) with Standpunch and Spookball

Alternatively, you can supplement your team with the following viable counter Pokémon:

  • Latios (Dragon/Psycho type) with Zenkopfstoß and Psychokinesis.
  • Metagross (Steel/Psycho Type) with Headbutt and Psychokinesis
  • Groudon (type ground) with clay shot and earthquake
  • Gengar (type spirit/poison) with dark claw or licker and haunted ball
  • Galagladi (type Psycho/Combat) or Guardevoir (type Psycho/Fairy) with Confusion and Psychokinesis
  • Rihornior (type Ground) with Clay Clam and Earthquake
  • Trikephalo (type Unlicht/Dragon) with Bite and Finsteraura
  • Despotar (Rock/Unlight type) with Bite and Crunch

When you catch Gengar, it has the Licker (Spirit) and Psychokinesis (Psycho) attacks and the following Catch HP values:

  • 1566 to 1644 without weather boost
  • 1985 to 2055 with weather boost (fog and cloudy weather).

Gengar also wears the party hat, by the way, in both the normal and shiny variants.

We wish you good luck with raiding and lots of shiny luck!

Pokémon GO

Pokémon Go is the mobile spin-off of Nintendo’s popular Pokémon game series for Android and iOS. It is a so-called “location-based game”, i.e. a game that uses the player’s immediate surroundings. It is based on the principle of augmented reality.

Pokémon Map: Between landmarks and sights

Pokémon Go uses a Global Positioning System (GPS) to determine the player’s location and displays it on a map that also represents the playing field. The map is based on OpenStreetMap maps. The game is played mostly outdoors and uses landmarks, landmarks and other notable or eye-catching objects in the world to position either PokéStops or arenas there for you to battle for supremacy. Join either Team Intuition (Team Yellow, Zapdos), Team Wisdom (Team Blue, Arktos), or Team Daring (Team Red, Lavados). Under their flag you can then fight for the arenas, which are placed at hotspots like churches or similar. Pokémon can appear anywhere, though.

Pocket monsters visible on the Pokémon Go Map are randomly loaded into the game’s virtual map by the game server. If several players are playing in the same location, each player can see and catch the Pokémon independently of the others.

Pokémon Go Updates, News, Raids and More

The developers at Niantic regularly provide Pokémon Go with new updates or special raids that should only be tackled in a group of several people. The Pokémon Go Raids are therefore very popular, as they also offer the prospect of particularly rare Pokémon. For example, in the past, legendary Pokémon could always be caught on special occasions (Pokémon Go events). For particularly eager mobile or smartphone Pokémon trainers, there is also an external IV calculator, such as the online tool from Pokemon.gameinfo.io or on Pokefans.net, to check the values of your Pokémon.
