At the bottom of the screen, Pokémon GO shows you all the Pokémon in the vicinity. In our short guide, we show you how you can definitely find the desired Pokémon in your area, what it is about the step symbols and how the spawn rate of the Pokémon behaves.
If you don’t feel like catching the umpteenth Taubsi or Hornliu, you can look at the bottom right of the screen to see which rare Pokémon are nearby. In our guide, we’ll show you what the step symbols in this display are all about and how you’re guaranteed to find the Pokémon you want in your vicinity.
The up to three footsteps indicate how far away the Pokémon is. Three footsteps means the Pokémon can be found in under 1,000 meters, two footsteps means it’s under 100 meters, and one step symbol means the Pokémon is somewhere in a range of under 20 meters. If there is no additional symbol left on the portrait, it should appear next to you in the next few seconds.

To find the Pokémon you want, simply walk in a straight line first (if possible). If the footsteps become less, you are on the right path; if the Pokémon disappears, you must run back to the starting point. It is important that you remember the starting point where you started looking. From the starting point, if possible, run in the opposite direction and try your luck. The principle is trial and error. In our picture gallery you can see how we were successful in our search for Dratini.
Pokémon GO – Tips and Guides: Do certain Pokémon always reappear in the same place?
Exactly when and in which cycle a Pokémon reappears in the same area is not entirely clear, even for many fans and testers. In our experience, Dratini and other Pokémon were always found in the same place. However, we didn’t stay in that spot for hours, but the next day it was guaranteed to be in exactly the same place again. If you occasionally take a look at the Pokémon nearby at work, you’ll notice that some Pokémon change position after a certain amount of time – the Nebulak that was three steps away earlier is suddenly catchable next to us. So it can also happen in the unlikely case that a nearby Pokémon disappears from the list again, even though you were already very close to it. Our theory is also shared by a tester on reddit:

According to redditor TheSilphRoad, Pokémon and the spawn rate behave like this:
- Pokémon are always at static points and seem to respawn every hour.
- After 15 minutes they despawn again
- Pokémon spawns are not tied to players – so you don’t take each other’s Pokémon away from you
- The spawn point of the Pokémon has approximately the same radius as your character (with slight variations)
- Spawn points are often (not always) tied to places where many users check their phones (i.e. banks, train stations, major intersections, etc.)
- Certain Pokémon types are more or less tied to the appropriate locations (water Pokémon at lakes, poison Pokémon in forests, etc.)
- This does not mean, however, that you can encounter a Stone Pokémon in the middle of a lake, for example.
- Disappeared bushes (kicked up grass) seem to have a respawn time of 45 minutes
- The fastest way to get random Pokémon is to sit between three Pokéstops that are occupied by lure modules
So we can safely say that you can farm desired Pokémon more or less every day. This is especially useful for evolving rare Pokémon. In our case we develop and so over (long) time a Dragonir and later a Dragoran. If you try to evolve a Garados from a Karpador, you will also progress faster if you run through a few Karpador spawn points every day – after all, you need 400 candies to evolve a Karpador.
Pokémon GO – Tips and Guides: What do the swirled leaves on the map mean?
The leaves indicate that there might be a Pokémon here. So your chance of finding a Pokémon here is high. Some of the leaves can be seen even from a great distance. As you can see in the penultimate picture of our gallery, we passed two of these spots. We didn’t encounter any Pokémon at the first one, but immediately at the second. The program is usually very gracious and makes the swirled leaves appear right next to sidewalks, so you don’t have to run through the tall grass to catch one of the critters like in other Pokémon games. Of course, to attract more Pokémon in the nearby area, you can use smoke. This lasts for 30 minutes and increases the chance that you’ll run into one.
Pokémon GO
Pokémon Go is the mobile spin-off of Nintendo’s popular Pokémon game series for Android and iOS. It is a so-called “location-based game”, i.e. a game that uses the player’s immediate surroundings. It is based on the principle of augmented reality.
Pokémon Map: Between landmarks and sights
Pokémon Go uses a Global Positioning System (GPS) to determine the player’s location and displays it on a map that also represents the playing field. The map is based on OpenStreetMap maps. The game is played mostly outdoors and uses landmarks, landmarks and other notable or eye-catching objects in the world to position either PokéStops or arenas there for you to battle for supremacy. Join either Team Intuition (Team Yellow, Zapdos), Team Wisdom (Team Blue, Arktos), or Team Daring (Team Red, Lavados). Under their flag you can then fight for the arenas, which are placed at hotspots like churches or similar. Pokémon can appear anywhere, though.
Pocket monsters visible on the Pokémon Go Map are randomly loaded into the game’s virtual map by the game server. If several players are playing in the same location, each player can see and catch the Pokémon independently of the others.
Pokémon Go Updates, News, Raids and More
The developers at Niantic regularly provide Pokémon Go with new updates or special raids that should only be tackled in a group of several people. The Pokémon Go Raids are therefore very popular, as they also offer the prospect of particularly rare Pokémon. For example, in the past, legendary Pokémon could always be caught on special occasions (Pokémon Go events). For particularly eager mobile or smartphone Pokémon trainers, there is also an external IV calculator, such as the online tool from Pokemon.gameinfo.io or on Pokefans.net, to check the values of your Pokémon.
