Those who log in to Pokémon GO via a Pokémon Trainer Club account sometimes have to deal with login problems that are due to disconnections. To counteract this, Niantic has introduced the option of linking Facebook or Google accounts to Pokémon GO after the fact. This way, you have an alternative login option in case of connection problems. We’ll explain exactly how the whole thing works here in our news.
Last week, it happened again: Pokémon GO players who traditionally log into the app via the Pokémon Trainer Club (PTC) (including the author of this article) received a message in the game that a login was not possible due to a connection error. This problem has plagued long-established Pokémon trainers since the release of Pokémon GO and is a source of frustration for players who are unable to continue a catch or Pokéstop series because of the connection failure – the associated XP bonus is then quickly gone.
However, Niantic has recently found a remedy for this problem – largely unnoticed by many players, as Pokemongohub reports: You can now easily connect your PTC account to a Google or Facebook account to avoid such disconnections in the future. We will now explain in detail how the whole thing works.
First, go to the menu of the Pokémon GO app (via the Pokéball at the bottom of the screen) and click on the Settings button at the top right. Then scroll down to the section with the heading Account. There, check either Google or Facebook, depending on which account you want to link. This must be an account that is not already linked to another Pokémon GO account. If necessary, create a new account just for Pokémon GO if you are concerned about your privacy. Once you’ve done that, you’ll need to log out of the app and log back in with the linked Facebook or Google account.
Otherwise, the following instructions apply to linking the accounts:
- Niantic will not have access to your Google or Facebook profile when you link the accounts.
- If you unlink your accounts, your Pokémon GO account will not be deleted – only the link between the two accounts will be removed.
Niantic stores your Trainer ID. If you link your Pokémon GO account to a account with a Google or Facebook account, Niantic stores the ID associated with that account and links it to your Trainer ID. If you log in via Google or Facebook, the app searches Niantic’s database for the corresponding ID. If there is a link, it allows you to log in.

Pokémon Go is the mobile spin-off of Nintendo’s popular Pokémon game series for Android and iOS. It is a so-called “location-based game”, i.e. a game that uses the player’s immediate surroundings. It is based on the principle of augmented reality.
Pokémon Map: Between landmarks and sights
Pokémon Go uses a Global Positioning System (GPS) to determine the player’s location and displays it on a map that also represents the playing field. The map is based on OpenStreetMap maps. The game is played mostly outdoors and uses landmarks, landmarks and other notable or eye-catching objects in the world to position either PokéStops or arenas there for you to battle for supremacy. Join either Team Intuition (Team Yellow, Zapdos), Team Wisdom (Team Blue, Arktos), or Team Daring (Team Red, Lavados). Under their flag you can then fight for the arenas, which are placed at hotspots like churches or similar. Pokémon can appear anywhere, though.
Pocket monsters visible on the Pokémon Go Map are randomly loaded into the game’s virtual map by the game server. If several players are playing in the same location, each player can see and catch the Pokémon independently of the others.

The developers at Niantic regularly provide Pokémon Go with new updates or special raids that should only be tackled in a group of several people. The Pokémon Go Raids are therefore very popular, as they also offer the prospect of particularly rare Pokémon. For example, in the past, legendary Pokémon could always be caught on special occasions (Pokémon Go events). For particularly eager mobile or smartphone Pokémon trainers, there is also an external IV calculator, such as the online tool from Pokemon.gameinfo.io or on Pokefans.net, to check the values of your Pokémon.
