What good is my Pokémon from Pokémon Go that just hatched from an egg or that I caught around the corner at the ice cream shop? These are questions that the Pokémon Go app for iOS and Android doesn’t answer. But the theorycrafters in the TheSilphRoad community can. Based on the Pokémon calculator from isitin, they have created their own simplified version of the calculation tool and offer you a quick and easy overview of whether your Pokémon is any good or not.

Pokémon Go: The IV-Rater from TheSilphRoad

IVs are the individual stats of your Pokémon – each one has attack, defense, and life values, and each Pokémon has unique amounts of these attributes, which can range from 0 to 15. This doesn’t necessarily make evaluating your Pokémon easy, especially if you’re only glancing at them in the app. So that’s why you need calculation tools.

First, select the Pokémon whose strength you want to find out. In step 1, use the slider to select the level of your Pokémon trainer.

After that, in step 2, position the bump in the competition value arc. You’ll notice that there are different ranges possible for the CP, so there’s an indicator for your Pokémon’s upgrades below it. This way you can check if you have reached the right position on the CP sheet – just check how much stardust and how many candies you would have to pay for the next upgrade and adjust the CP sheet accordingly.

In step 3, set the exact CP values and health points of your Pokémon. Then click on “Rate My Pokémon” and you will see how well your Pokémon can do in battle. TheSilphRoad’s tool will give you a recommendation as to whether or not the Pokémon is any good – if it says “Oh Dear…” then you can expect the Pokémon to do pretty modestly in battle. All ratings above “Average” and “Solid” say that the monster is worth picking up. Pokémon with a rating like “Wow, Traveler, this mon has perfect IV’s” should definitely not be sent to Professor Willow.

Pokémon Go: The IV rater from isitin

isitin’s tool works very similarly, but is a bit more fiddly to use. But in addition to rating IVs, it also shows you which Pokémon’s attacks are the best. This is because: each Pokémon can have one standard attack and one special attack. When the Pokémon spawns, the game randomly selects from a certain set of attacks that this one monster has. The DPS values of a Hyper Beam (2nd attack) of a Rattikarl are approximately higher than the DPS values of a Hyper Fang (2nd attack). Accordingly, it may make more sense to look for a Rattikarl that has Hyper Beam and not Hyper Fang or Shoveler. In addition, you can also see at isitin against what kind of Pokémon the attacks are useful – and against which not.

What both tools do allow you to do, however, is to evaluate Pokémon in terms of whether one of the expensive upgrades is even worth it, or whether you should rather save stardust and candies for another representative of this Pokémon species. For those of you who like to fight in arenas, they certainly make sense!

Pokémon GO

Pokémon Go is the mobile spin-off of Nintendo’s popular Pokémon game series for Android and iOS. It is a so-called “location-based game”, i.e. a game that uses the player’s immediate surroundings. It is based on the principle of augmented reality.

Pokémon Map: Between landmarks and sights

Pokémon Go uses a Global Positioning System (GPS) to determine the player’s location and displays it on a map that also represents the playing field. The map is based on OpenStreetMap maps. The game is played mostly outdoors and uses landmarks, landmarks and other notable or eye-catching objects in the world to position either PokéStops or arenas there for you to battle for supremacy. Join either Team Intuition (Team Yellow, Zapdos), Team Wisdom (Team Blue, Arktos), or Team Daring (Team Red, Lavados).
