BACKGROUND

Born in a quiet but historic village, Haugland enjoyed high praise and little competition from an early age. Always the best at anything he set out to do, he wanted to be a licensed pediatric surgeon, so he enrolled in medical school. However, he quickly found that he didn’t enjoy memorizing theory, so he decided to train as a paramedic so he could be in the thick of things faster.
The Norwegian armed forces opened up a new world of achievements for him. He completed basic training and joined the Norwegian Home Guard, where he gained a reputation as a hero. After fulfilling his duty, he was accepted into the Forsvarets Spesialkommando and shortly thereafter took part in a sensational hostage rescue. As part of a joint UN mission in Somalia, he was able to save Kali’s life thanks to his theatrical manner and impulsive nature. The offer to join NIGHTHAVEN followed immediately.
PSYCHOLOGICAL REPORT
It takes a certain type of person to be on the front lines of disaster relief, and at first glance Specialist Håvard “Ace” Haugland doesn’t fit that profile at all. He is arrogant, bold and selfish. However, his outward appearance is based entirely on altruism, and his interest in social media reflects his desire to be perceived as the ultimate upstanding citizen. He has a certain hunger, not only for medical emergencies and evacuations, but also for positive publicity.
I assume his craving for attention stems from the fact that he was growing up in a small village where he was seen as a kind of local hero. I was surprised to learn of his previous desire to be a pediatric surgeon – a role he felt was the pinnacle of social standing. Given his penchant for the practical over the theoretical, I’m not surprised he ended up choosing to train as a paramedic. His conscription into the army and subsequent role as a combat medic only further reinforced his “golden boy” image.
The man himself remains an enigma and is a construct of his desire to granularly control how others perceive him. His role drives him to be personable and to work closely with his peers, at least until it’s time for the post-mission interview. But behind that facade there is a battle raging, and I wonder if Haugland is aware of it. If he’s unsure, it doesn’t paralyze him in any way, but it’s funny trying to analyze someone who’s so absorbed in their outwardly identifiable characteristics.
He enjoys exploring the world for good photo opportunities on his travels, but claims his heart will always be in Norway. However, I wonder whose approval he is trying to win and whether success might even be possible. When I asked about his longstanding association with Specialist Jaimini Kalimohan “Kali” Shah, he was full of praise. I believe his loyalty is assured to her as long as he swears by fame and fortune, but I worry about their relationship and also about his sanity if he ever really wants to satisfy his hunger for approval.
