BACKGROUND

“Don’t ask me what I’m doing with my phone right now. You don’t want to know.”

Enatsu grew up on the outskirts of Tokyo in Suginami. From a young age, he was fascinated by robotics. He designed and programmed ground and flying drones and won numerous competitions. After graduating from Tokyo Metropolitan University with a degree in electrical and electronic engineering, Enatsu was encouraged to join the National Police Agency’s Security Bureau, where he worked tirelessly in the research and development lab. Enatsu, who was skilled in both counterterrorism and intelligence gathering, began developing special technologies to facilitate the Security Bureau’s work. After the joint exercises held after the Nagoya hostage crisis, Enatsu was transferred to the Aichi Prefectural Police Headquarters Task Force. There, he persistently worked on creative solutions and alternative strategies. Eventually, he returned to Tokyo, where he attracted Rainbow’s attention thanks to his exceptional intelligence techniques and quick and unpredictable work style.

PSYCHOLOGICAL EXPERTISE

Given Specialist Masaru “Echo” Enatsu’s career, it would be an understatement to say there were “some” endorsements for his behavior. Prior to our first meeting, I had met with all Rainbow members – some several times. When Enatsu admitted that he was avoiding me at the beginning of our conversation, I knew we would get along well.

Often, I don’t read a file in advance so that my counterpart has a chance to describe himself in his own words. In this case, however, I needed to know what people were thinking because Enatsu was prepared for my reaction.

I conclude that he and his family are not very close. He joked that a calculator is more emotional than his parents. Because of his upbringing, he doesn’t like to work in groups because he doesn’t know friendly, mutually beneficial interactions. I hope Rainbow will improve with time, but his desire to explore the “AI” of the other operators through provocation is something that needs to be addressed within the group.

Enatsu’s tactics have been described as complex and unpredictable. You can develop a strong team strategy, but that requires communication. I would also encourage the team to think about how best to exploit Enatsu’s potential. Some operators assume that there will be problems, so the outcome is predictable.

Specialists Yumiko “Hibana” Imagawa and Grace “Dokkaebi” Nam actually often work with Enatsu on research and development. I have also noticed that he has developed a strong bond with Specialist Taina “Caveira” Pereira. I suspect he appreciates Pereira’s openness. This would fit with his view that people who are easily offended simply “can’t take a joke.”

Enatsu gets frustrated quickly. He has few interests outside of work, so he thinks of nothing but increasing his efficiency on the job. He needs to understand that all people need a distraction from time to time – especially those who have extremely stressful jobs. It is not a sign of weakness to “switch off” once in a while, even if one is conditioned to believe that a quiet mind means a lack of intelligence.
