BACKGROUND

Elżbieta Bosak is the youngest daughter of Jan Bosak, a respected former commander of the Polish special forces GROM. Like her sister Zofia, Ela mastered the grueling training imposed on them by their father with flying colors. She attended officers’ school but could not reconcile military life with her need for independence and went to Berlin to study fine arts. Because she used military paraphernalia in her art, the owner of a small private security company noticed her and offered her a job. She was valued in the private sector for her expertise in survival tactics and her unique and adaptable approach to protection and intelligence gathering, but it was the death of her father that ultimately persuaded her to return to Poland and join GROM. Ela is a dependable team player with latent leadership qualities, although her distrust of authority remains a point of contention. Her successful working relationship with the SEALs earned her an invitation to join Rainbow.

PSYCHOLOGICAL REPORT

We civilians can probably understand the independent nature of special forces Elżbieta “Ela” Bosak better than a stiff commander. Of course, soldiers are expected to obey orders, and for a person so quick to buck authority, she shows deep respect for the military and her role in it. It is their autonomy that offends traditionalists – and perhaps their anger. From our first meeting, I noticed her determination. She’s fighting against something, but probably not against authorities – at least not only.

While I wouldn’t dismiss the concerns of commanding officers who mention that Bosak can be impulsive at times, I would advise them to value her creative resilience instead. Anyone who has worked with artists knows the value of this quality. It manifests itself in protecting her team and in her high number of successfully completed missions. Her impulsiveness—her adaptability—is the very trait that makes her excel at performance.

Her father’s influence left a deep mark on both Ela and her sister Zofia. Ela is more accepting that her father was extraordinary but not perfect. As I read Commandant Jan Bosak’s file, I had an image of a proud and sensitive man in my mind. That’s the key. Ela perceives the patterns and behavior in her environment with a keen sense. If she shows defiant reactions, it is because she is disappointed in those who lack this “perception”. After joining Rainbow, this frustration has eased somewhat thanks to her collaboration with other elite fighters, as she no longer feels constrained by the attitudes of those around her.

Ela’s defiance doesn’t stop at her private life either. She let me know that she is not interested in personal development. She was surprised that I knew about her “voluntary work”. Late at night she roams the streets handing out groceries, blankets or maybe just a cigarette. Then she listens. Her conversations with strangers give her new perspectives. She absorbs them to gain new insights and thus improve her skills, but also uses them as a spur to her work. She is not satisfied with the current situation, but that does not prevent her from trying with all her might to change it.
