BACKGROUND

“Many people think my code name is a reference to the fact that I’m not a man of many words. But maybe I just don’t like you.”

Because of his outstanding and well-rounded education, Chandar was one of the youngest students ever accepted to Cambridge University. After graduating with a degree in electronics and computer engineering, he completed an internship with a renowned technology company, where he was instrumental in the development and function of prototypes of various security systems. His ingenuity did not go unnoticed by the British intelligence agency Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) for long. After demonstrating his great talent for deciphering codes, Chandar became an intelligence officer in the Division of Signals Intelligence (SIGINT).

PSYCHOLOGICAL EXPERTISE.

The meaning of Specialist Mark Chandar’s code name, “Mute,” may not be obvious at first glance. Although he abhors small talk, he is not particularly shy. He can also come across as quite brash – a trait that puts many people off. Whatever it is that bothers him, there are some signs that he can’t easily shed that behavior. I suspect it’s his impatience. He needs to understand that there can be different approaches to the same problem. Interestingly, Specialist Mike “Thatcher” Baker seems to have come to terms with his behavior at some point. It is even said that he defended Chandar several times in front of others.

Chandar seems to be attracted to certain people. I’ve particularly noticed that he’s been getting more and more involved with specialist Timur “Glaz” Glazkov lately. Since Chandar has an unusual penchant for taking apart equipment to create something new, I think he is attracted to abstract thinkers. Glazkov also has a knack for interpreting complex situations in a very unique way.

Because of his knowledge of information security, Chandar understands the importance of confidentiality and does not find it easy to speak up or ask personal questions. In his department, and here at Rainbow, information is invaluable – and often makes the difference between life and death. So of course I respect his behavior, if only up to a point. I had to find a different approach to him and there is indeed a common thread – and that is history!

For someone so focused on science, I found that quite surprising. He is from one of the most historically important cities in England, York, and I too love that city. He described to me in wonderful detail what he saw when he walked past the Gothic church every day on his way to school. He liked to lean back and look up at the bell tower until he got dizzy.

My meeting with Chandar made me realize that at Rainbow we focus primarily on the core competencies of our operator. It is invaluable when our people have broad passions and interests. Chandar has proven that there is much more to him. He is much more than just someone who is used to being the smartest person in the room. Despite his young age, I am sure he has something to teach others.
