BACKGROUND
“Out of the way!”
Cowden was born in the far north of Scotland. His father was a soldier and his mother a nurse. They moved to Inverness with him and his three siblings when he was five. As a very athletic young man, he took over the captaincy of the Scottish U20 rugby team in 1998. Not least because of the long family tradition, he reported to the 3rd Infantry Division – the 3rd UK Mechanized Division – of the British Army. With his high level of commitment and his imposing figure, he perfectly reflected the historical nickname of his division – “Iron Sides”. His first assignment took him to the armored division, where he studied engineering and specialized in improving combat vehicles. In this role, he developed various breakthrough tactics. He was later recruited into the SAS, where he holds multiple records for speed and strength. Cowden is an expert in mechanical, ballistic, explosive, and thermal breach strategies, making him the ideal operator for rapid and relatively silent destruction.
PSYCHOLOGICAL REPORT
It’s part of my job to understand how my counterpart has been influenced by their homeland, and Specialist Seamus “Sledge” Cowden seems irrevocably imprinted with the rugged terrain of his native land. This does not only apply to his imposing appearance and athleticism. I can’t help but feel that the wild is ingrained in his personality as well. He’s proud and composed, but he admits he can be quite a hothead at times. The operational reports speak of his courage, his leadership qualities and his extensive operational experience, but his unpredictability is also mentioned. He is much more than the “gentle giant” that many describe him as.
Cowden is a born storyteller. During our conversation, he unwrapped one robber’s pistol after another. At the age of twelve, for example, he put together a glider using old canvas and threw himself off the roof of his house. He broke both ankles in the process. Once during his military training he accidentally blew up the entire bunkhouse while trying out a new breaching technique. Another time he sank a captain’s motorcycle trying to see how far he could go on the surface of the water by jumping over the pier… not very far, I suppose. But his stories aren’t just for entertainment. They also help him create a comfortable connection with his counterpart. This man’s leadership style is as informal as it is nonchalant.
Cowden sees his teammates as family, especially Specialist Mike “Thatcher” Baker, who convinced him to switch to the Caber. Many at Rainbow see Sledge as an operator to work with.
All in all, Cowden is uncomplicated and unassuming. However, the subject of politics quickly gets on his nerves. As a self-proclaimed news junkie, he doesn’t shy away from any debate. In fact, that’s why he joined the military and one of his brothers is currently an elected member of Parliament. Cowden knows that Rainbow operators are not allowed to make political statements while on a mission, and so far there have been no problems. We should trust that he is able to control his hot temper. At least as long as he’s not standing at the bar in the pub.
