BACKGROUND

“Of course I care about the environment. At least in my immediate environment.”

Although Porter was not a brilliant student, the aptitude tests showed his strong inclination for science. His teachers and parents never stopped encouraging him, and eventually he was able to find his own way through a rather unorthodox schooling of tutors, home teachers, and field science. He thrived in this environment, far removed from conventional teaching, and quickly developed exceptional skills in chemistry, biology and mathematics. As might be expected, Porter was not interested in traditional studies. So he forged his identity papers and enlisted in the British Army. Although he wasn’t always enthusiastic about the strict rules, the varied training and experiences that army life had to offer made up for it. Although breaking the rules earned him severe penalties on several occasions, his superiors quickly learned to appreciate his innovative and strategic way of thinking. He was encouraged to join the SAS. Porter is an inquisitive person and enjoys learning new things – languages ​​and music, for example – but he prefers his own learning methods and is less suited to conventional training methods.

PSYCHOLOGICAL REPORT

It’s very important to me not to have a preconceived notion before speaking face-to-face with one of our Special Operations personnel. Since Specialist James “Smoke” Porter’s assessments are so contradictory from the outset, I would have wanted to see for myself in this case anyway. So when he came into my office, he was kind of a mystery that needed to be explored.

Porter is described throughout as a serene man. When looking through his files, I noticed that his “aloofness” increases even further in tricky situations. It’s probably not about detachment, it’s about focus. I thought about my uncle, tapping his forehead with his finger and telling me to get my mind under control. I think Porter controls his mind to better perform tasks and filter out dangerous distractions. He always tries to make his decisions away from all emotions and looks for outlets like live concerts to get rid of this tension again. This is how he manages to be the person he needs to be for the job.

From the start it is clear that Porter’s parents raised him to be a free spirit and encouraged him to forge his own path in education and personal development. Aside from a few unfortunate mishaps – one experiment left some physical scars but no mental scars as far as I can see – his unorthodox upbringing and education helped him grow into a complex, dynamic personality who couldn’t be pigeonholed stuck.

Porter is well-liked by teammates and, despite a certain bravado, is considered a valuable partner. However, descriptions like “adrenaline junkie” and “fearless” are a bit too simplistic for me. Porter is much more complex than that. He knows how to calculate and carefully weigh risks. Porter, like all of our other Operators, understands that respecting your fear is far more important than pretending to be fearless.

Porter has taught himself everything since he was a child and to this day spends a lot of time developing his personality. He likes to learn new things and, as soon as he has mastered something, he immediately looks for a new field of activity. The only exception is his adopted daughter. He only showed me one photo of her. I’ve never seen a kid surrounded by such dangerous gear, but Porter assures me she’s in high school now, excelling in a system he’s never been able to understand. Through them, he sees the world in a whole new light – and it’s exactly the kind of challenge he loves.
