BACKGROUND

Baker comes from a family in which the adults earned their money as longshoremen or soldiers. He enlisted in the military at the age of eighteen, despite attempts by his family to urge him to join the family business as a loader. The military then threw him straight into the deep end. Baker immediately found himself in politically charged conflict situations, which he mastered in an exemplary manner. A few training sessions later, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross for taking part in another conflict. His keen powers of observation, his determined nature and his outstanding qualities in close combat made him the perfect bodyguard.

Because of his extensive combat experience and excellent SAS tactics, Baker is an important part of any Rainbow operation. He has continued to hone his expertise in protections and electronic counter methods, and often works with our engineers to further improve equipment. As an Oberstabsfeldwebel (sergeant major of the regiment), Baker is well respected and a reliable mentor to new recruits. Baker trains his agility, refines his abseiling techniques and has broken numerous mountaineering records.

Knowing that Specialist Mike “Thatcher” Baker is cynical about bureaucracy, I wasn’t at all surprised that he wasn’t keen on the idea of ​​meeting me. I needed a different approach. I assume that he only wanted to live there temporarily after his wife divorced, but he has no other place of residence now.

Growing up on the coast, Baker has a strong bond with the water. We spent our entire meeting aboard his ship, looking out at the cold sea. I’m not particularly skilled myself. He replied that first of all he appreciates the necessary precision and that he also likes to make things out of wood that serve a specific purpose. I said that the same probably applies to the training of his protégés. But he said that the “why” that is so important to us “normal people” doesn’t mean much to him.

Among his few close friends is Specialist Seamus “Sledge” Cowden. I was surprised at how tolerant Thatcher is of Specialist Mark “Mute” Chandar, given that Thatcher really doesn’t like the roar of youth. When I asked him about it, he just said, “Mute’s a smart guy.” It almost sounded like he was a little jealous. I wonder if Thatcher would have liked to have been like Mute.

Baker is by no means a technophobe, but he has a fundamental aversion to technology. For him they are tools – like hammers or screwdrivers – and nothing more. He is annoyed by the idea that his fellow human beings rely too much on technical achievements.
