In this way, Wamai can not only render attackers’ grenades and projectile devices useless, but also use strategic placement to make those projectiles dangerous to themselves.

“The closer you are to death, the stronger life pulsates.”
Born to a family of fishermen off the coast of Kenya, Furaha spent his childhood hunting sharks and retrieving lost treasures from the seabed of the Lamu archipelago. It was soon shown that he could stay under water much longer than his friends. A medical exam revealed an abnormal physiology that supported Furaha’s long-held theory that he was “not from here.” When the opportunity arose to join the Kenya Navy and later the Kenya Special Boat Unit, he put his skills to good use. With his successful and often record-breaking free dives, he quickly attracted the attention of naval generals and scientists worldwide. He later switched to NIGHTHAVEN, who promised him more free time and a private boat,

Talking to Specialist Ngũgĩ Muchoki “Wamai” Furaha is like talking underwater. Words are exchanged, but it is not certain that they have any meaning. Surprisingly, I find our conversations very refreshing. Free association brings a purity of being able to jump from one abstract concept to another. Furaha also senses when his opponent can no longer follow; when I feel completely without anchor, his quick smile and change of subject reassure me that we haven’t left any human thought behind forever. This raises the question of whether I should be more flexible in my thought processes, quickly followed by the next question of who I would then become.
The existential questions of a person who spends his free time anoxically do not arise very often for us mere mortals. And probably, lacking Furaha’s very own sensibility on these issues, I don’t really see any value in them either. His unusual approach leads to strategies that are completely alien. I have only come across Furaha’s ability to conceptualize three-dimensional spaces not only horizontally but also vertically in extremely obsessive pilots. And yet, surprisingly, it lacks any inner dimension.
I once spoke to a well-known monk who had spent his life striving for “complete zero”. I saw in him the same depth that I now see in Furaha. But where many people’s spirituality brings out the parts of their personality they most admire, the exact opposite is true of the two. Furaha’s life is in the service of his spirituality. The anoxia is part of his addiction.
I try to remain neutral in all my analytical conversations. Furaha is a talented operator, capable, intelligent, and unpredictable. His ability to take the tension out of an entire room is worth its weight in gold. And yet you never feel like you really understand him fully. Like the nitrogen that must redistribute itself within the diver’s body before surfacing, Furaha’s true nature is diffuse. To describe him with a precise definition would be to narrow him down, and I’m pretty sure there’s nothing he hates more.
