Rocket League becomes free-to-play.

Rocket League will become free-to-play. The developer announced this on its website last night. In addition, the game is coming to the Epic Store.

The developers want to take “the next step,” according to their statement on the game’s future progress. Rocket League will now become free-to-play after five years. Psyonix justifies the decision by saying that they want to grow the community and make the game more accessible to casual gamers.

What is changing?

According to the developer, the gameplay will not change in any way. Mainly visual changes and improvements are planned. Game modes, as well as tournaments and challenges, will also be revised and improved. In addition, the game will be playable across platforms in the future.

Those who have already purchased the game can of course continue to play it on Steam. However, as soon as the game becomes free-to-play and comes to the Epic Store, it can no longer be purchased on Steam. Players who have already purchased Rocket League before the free-to-play release will be rewarded by the developers with the following:

• The “Since 20XX” title which shows when you’ve owned the game.
• 200+ common items are upgraded to “Legacy” quality.

The game will most likely be funded via microtransactions and such in the future. The move towards free-to-play has no disadvantages for previous” Rocket League” players. The game can still be played on all platforms on which it was purchased. So far, only “Later this Summer” has been mentioned as the date for the free-to-play release.
