Single-player
The M16 is fully automatic in the campaign. It is the starter weapon in Operation 40, where it is equipped with an ACOG sight and an M203 grenade launcher. Carlos holds an M16 with a silencer in his hands. In the mission SOG it is the starter weapon, this time there is a masterkey on it. In the same mission, the weapon comes with different attachments. In the Crash Site mission, you can pick up the M16 from fallen teammates. Overall, the M16 has low recoil, a high rate of fire, and medium damage.
Multiplayer
Here, the M16 shoots three-shot salvos like its predecessors from the Modern Warfare series. It is part of a standard class and therefore does not need to be purchased once you have unlocked the class editor.
The M16 does a lot of damage and has little recoil, which is triggered by automatic three-shot volleys that work best at medium to long range, at which the weapon does the most damage in its category. At short range, however, the weapon becomes less effective than a fully automatic weapon due to the small delay between volleys. All three bullets must hit for a kill at short to medium range, and four at long range, meaning you usually only have to pull the
trigger twice. However, if all three bullets hit and one of them goes to the head, you can take out an enemy instantly even at range. The recoil is low, predictable and easy to control, but can still make you miss your target at long range.
For the most part, the M16 is like its predecessors from the Modern Warfare series, but the range has been increased. The infrared sight and ACOG sight actually reduce recoil, unlike the other weapons that can have these attachments. Also, the M16 has a colored grip with every attachment except the grenade launcher.
The M16 and the G11 are comparable because both are assault rifles that fire in three-shot bursts. The M16 unlocks much earlier, does higher damage (40-30 instead of 35-25), can accept more attachments, and has the highest range of any assault rifle. The G11 for its part has more rounds in the magazine, less recoil, fires faster, and has the spread of a submachine gun. As a result, many players find the G11 better and it is seen more often than the M16. However, the M16 is still an excellent rifle and the choice between these two weapons simply depends on the player’s preferences.
Zombie mode
The M16 is also available in survival mode and you can buy it off the wall for 1200 points. It can be found to the right of the power switch on Kino der Toten, in the tunnels in Five, near the Speed Cola on Ascension, on the wall behind the slingshot on Call of the Dead, on the right side of the wall next to the door when you’re before the power (if you took the mine entrance) on Shangri-La, and in Tunnel 6 on Moon. Just like in multiplayer, it fires three shots. Up to mid rounds the M16 is useful and up to round 10 it kills with a headshot, after that you should punch it or give it away for a better weapon.
If you upgrade the M16 with the Pack-a-Punch automaton, its new name is the “Skull Berster,” which makes it fully automatic, has increased damage, and gives it an underbarrel grenade launcher. With headshots, the Skull Berster is useful until the early 20s rounds. The grenade launcher is good for taking out larger groups of zombies or making creepers. However, the blast radius is very large and usually hurts and confuses the player when used at close range unless you have Dr. Rivet. The Skull Berster is a good weapon with high damage and fast reload times, but the high rate of fire means you’ll quickly find yourself out of ammo. Fortunately, you can buy ammo for the weapon on the wall.

- An M16 with a flamethrower or grenade launcher has a different grip than the normal M16, because they added a heat shield. The heat shield of the flamethrower does not change with the camouflage, but that of the grenade launcher does.
- The M16 is the only weapon whose speed is increased with an infrared sight or an ACOG, plus the recoil is reduced.
- Killcams with the M16 sometimes get out of sync and several bullets are fired without making any noise, while others are then fired with too much.
- The icon of the M16 has a longer magazine than the weapon itself in the game. The same is true for the Commando.
- In the multiplayer loading screen, you can see a soldier carrying an M16 with ACOG sights, but instead of the grip being removed, it is now on top of the weapon.
- The “Red” camouflage on the M16 adds very few red spots on the weapon.
- When the player kills a marine in the Crash Site mission and picks up his M16, it makes no noise when firing or reloading.
- The M16 makes a guest appearance in Dead Ops Arcade, where it appears on the loading screen.
- Carlos’ M16 doesn’t have a grip.
- The Skull Berster is only the second weapon in Survival that has a grenade launcher, the first being the M1 Garand.
