The SMAW (shoulder-launched Multipurpose Assault Weapon) is a missile launcher featured in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Call of Duty: Black Ops II.

Campaign
In the mission Codename: Goalpost, the SMAW is the player’s secondary weapon and can be used to take out enemy T-90 tanks.
Multiplayer
Right from the start of multiplayer, the SMAW is available and can be used as part of a standard class. Like other rocket launchers, you have to go into the sights first to be able to pull the trigger. The SMAW works like the AT4 from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and the M72 LAW from Call of Duty: Black Ops because you can shoot enemies and air traffic with it. Although it has only one missile, it is extremely accurate and has a large blast radius – it is especially recommended for air-dropping vehicles behind which enemies are entrenched.

The SMAW appears in several special missions and is actually always used to destroy enemy tanks.
Call of Duty: Black Ops II
Campaign
The SMAW can be unlocked for your own class editor by playing through the campaign. However, the quality is not as good as in multiplayer. While it is rarely seen in the campaign, it does appear in all but one of the Strike Force missions.
Multiplayer
In multiplayer, the SMAW is a hybrid launcher, meaning it can be fired at both soldiers and enemy aircraft. This makes it a perfect mix of the FHJ-18 AA and the RPG. However, so that the weapon isn’t too unfair, you merely have one missile. With Scavenger, you can fill up the SMAW to two missiles, but you have to use a weapon that doesn’t explode for an ammo backpack to appear. Alternatively, you can pick up ammo from other SMAWs on the ground. Unlike other missile launchers, the missile does full damage against enemy air support, destroying them in one shot. This makes it ideal against shootdowns like the drone, because the drone has no defensive missiles and is destroyed instantly. However, if you should focus mainly on air support or enemy infantry, it would be better to use the other two launchers because they have two missiles each.
For the SMAW, you can unlock camouflages by completing challenges, just like any other weapon.

- Most likely the SMAW is the replacement for the AT4 because in earlier trailers you can see soldiers using the AT4, which was then removed from the game after all.
- When the launcher runs out of ammo, you take it out much slower.
- The SMAW doesn’t destroy enemy launchers that have a high health count, like the Osprey gunner, the attack helicopter, or the enhanced drone.
- If you aim, you can quite clearly see a barcode, which, when scanned, gives the following combination of numbers: 97 01 85 71 52 61 79 6d 65 4c 6f 76 65 73 53 61 72 61 68. If you translate the code with binary language, the outcome is “LovesSarah”.
- It is possible to take out a juggernaut with a direct hit.
Black Ops II
- The SMAW is the first missile launcher with a hybrid function, whose missiles do not always fly straight. Beyond a certain distance, the missile deviates drastically from the path.
- In the opening credits of the Cordis Die mission, you can see soldiers firing the SMAW, yet the missile flies in a way it can’t.
- Oddly enough, the SMAW doesn’t destroy an MQ-27 Dragonfire with one hit, even though it only has light armor, but other much more powerful launches break instantly unless defensive missiles are fired.
- From the third-person view, the SMAW is held like a pistol.
- Even when empty, the SMAW can still target enemy aircraft, this function is only suspended by an EMP or EMP grenades.
