Not only World of Warcraft has changed a lot in the last few years. A lot has happened for us players too. Many who were online in Azeroth almost around the clock at the time can no longer spend so much time on the upcoming WoW Classic adventure. That’s not a problem either, as long as you log onto the servers with realistic expectations. But imagination and reality often clash.
I can’t even say how long I was in vanilla WoW (buy now) needed to reach level 60. All I know is that it took a very long time – especially considering that I played every free minute I had outside of training and my rogue was part of a group of three that mastered pretty much every quest and dungeon together.
I recently discovered a level time calculator in the classic special Useful websites and tools for the Azeroth adventurer by Carmen , which I tried out: I’m playing rogue again, I’m probably a normal level type and unfortunately can’t put nearly as much time in invest the game, like back then. Job and family and stuff, you know. So I’m putting in 15 hours a week, which is probably very optimistic in the medium term. And what does the calculator spit out? I’ll be level 60 on January 21st, 2020, almost five months after launch. My better half, who was probably more realistic about the time available, will max out in March.
And although I took part in Vanilla at the time and, thanks to numerous articles and hours of research I have written myself, I can (at least I think so) categorize what is to come from August 27th, I had to swallow on this date. My subconscious already assigned the coming level phase to “we’ll get it over with quickly”, as has almost always been the case in modern MMORPGs for years. In other words: I’m already browsing BiS lists, dealing with optimal class combinations for raids, thinking about which professions make the most sense for the endgame and which items from the level phase I should definitely put aside for later. Or to put it another way: I deal with topics that will probably only be relevant to me sometime next year – if at all.

Because it will take a long time before this topic will be relevant for most players. But there are also players who are quite realistic about their everyday casual life and want to enjoy the level phase as much as possible. What comes next? You will see. What is WoW Classic?
World of Warcraft Classic is a true recreation of the original WoW as you know it from 2006. All parts of the game – from combat mechanics and talent trees to character models and zones – have been recreated, contributing to the authentic experience.
Getting Started
All players with an active World of Warcraft subscription or game time on their accounts have access toWoW Classic at no additional cost.
- Open the Blizzard Battle.net Desktop App and select World of Warcraft from the menu.
- Select World of Warcraft Classic from the Version menu. If you have more than one World of Warcraft account, you’ll see a second Account drop-down list. In this column, select the active account you want to play with.
- Click the Install button. The progress bar will tell you when your game is ready to play.
- Click the Play button when the installation is complete.
You will need to select the realm you want to play on from several different realm types. Make sure you choose the same realm as your friends – in World of Warcraft Classic, you can only group with characters that are on the same realm as you!
