On April 21, the Blizzard developers surprisingly implemented a patch on the WoW Classic live server. Starting with the chrono buff displacer, which allows us to save world buffs for later use. Karsten’s conclusion so far: The thing is the best invention since sliced bread.
WoW Classic’s world buffs are a polarizing topic. They are part of vanilla WoW, but only a few players used them regularly at the time. With Classic, that’s changed drastically because almost everyone loves buffing their way through raid bosses. At the same time, hardly anyone likes having to get the world buffs week after week. Especially not on PvP servers, where you can quickly lose the powerful strengthening effects with a dispell.
Some players get the world buffs several days before the actual raid evening because a) you never know whether world buffs with a long cooldown will be released outside of the agreed times, and b) to build in a time buffer if you do once again becomes the victim of a PvP attack. And as soon as the character had all the buffs, he was parked somewhere and only brought out of deep sleep again for the port in front of the raid instance. All this in combination was not much fun and also caused some frustration.

Many possible solutions came from the community. Some wanted to abolish world buffs completely or ban them within instances, and in both cases make #nochanges equal BIGchanges. Others wanted a similar world buff system in the EU and US as in China, where players can pick up their world buffs every hour. Still others just wanted world buffs to no longer be purgeable.
And what are the Blizzard developers doing? On April 21st they will implement what at first glance seems to be an unnecessarily complex solution: After completing a few quests and for 10 gold pieces, get the chrono strengthening shifter from Chromie in Andorhal, with which you can save the world buffs you have already acquired. The stored World Buffs are kept in an Overcharged Chrono Buff Displacer. As soon as you activate it, you get all the saved world buffs back. And you know what? I was skeptical at first, but now I think Blizzard’s solution is awesome and much more elegant than the solutions suggested by the community!
That’s why the Chrono Boost Displacer is awesome!
I find the Chrono Boost Shifter brilliant for several reasons:
- We still have access to the world buffs and still need to do something to get them: defeat Onyxia, Hakkar or Nefarian, cleanse a song flower, complete a tribute run in Dire Maul North, complete the Rend quest in UBRS. Plus: In the best case scenario, the community will continue to coordinate server-wide to clarify times and the like. Likewise, players can continue to offer services related to world buffs, such as ready-made DB North IDs or port services. All of this is good for MMO togetherness.
- Players can grab the world buffs with their main character, activate the chrono buff displacer, and then – crazy – keep playing the game with their main character. Since the introduction of the item, you suddenly see characters in dungeons or on battlefields that in the previous months were almost only online at raid time. The topic of “world buff cleaning” was also noticeably defused in this way.
- It’s now much easier to claim spontaneous world buffs, as you can simply park your character online in the appropriate location. If you have already saved all world buffs you have gotten so far with a chrono boost shifter, you will not lose a single minute of runtime while waiting for them. Also, the order in which you get the world buffs doesn’t matter anymore if you have enough chrono buff shifters in your pocket and mind the cooldown for storing them.
- Within the raids, we players are now much more flexible. For example, my guild raid on Sunday was Sapphiron and Kel’Thuzad in Naxxramas. After that it should go on to AQ40. So what have I done? After defeating the Lich, immediately secured my buffs and then got them out in the Temple of Ahn’Qiraj in such a way that they were also enough for Ouro and C’Thun. But be careful: In battle you can neither save nor retrieve the world buffs. Both were still possible on the PTR.
What is WoW Classic?
World of Warcraft Classic is a true recreation of the original WoW as you know it from 2006. All parts of the game – from combat mechanics and talent trees to character models and zones – have been recreated, contributing to the authentic experience.
Getting Started
All players with an active World of Warcraft subscription or game time on their accounts have access toWoW Classic at no additional cost.
- Open the Blizzard Battle.net Desktop App and select World of Warcraft from the menu.
- Select World of Warcraft Classic from the Version menu. If you have more than one World of Warcraft account, you’ll see a second Account drop-down list. In this column, select the active account you want to play with.
- Click the Install button. The progress bar will tell you when your game is ready to play.
- Click the Play button when the installation is complete.
You will need to select the realm you want to play on from several different realm types. Make sure you choose the same realm as your friends – in World of Warcraft Classic, you can only group with characters that are on the same realm as you!
