WoW column: Patch 6.2 is the end of WoD - and for 140 euros?

In an interview with Mamytwink.com, Cory Stockton explains: “Hellfire Citadel is the last planned raid of Warlords of Draenor.” Eight months after paying 40 euros for the expansion and almost 104 euros in subscription fees, Blizzard’s cheese is gone. But I still need cheese – for my whine.

So far, Warlords of Draenor has cost me 140 euros in purchase and subscription fees. When the next add-on comes in March – and I don’t think it will start any earlier – I’ll have spent around 240 euros for 8 dungeons and 3 raids. Yes, it has been around for a long time that Blizzard is only planning 2 raid tiers for Warlords of Draenor instead of the usual 3 for a WoW expansion. Tom Chilton told us that in an interview a year ago . However, nobody really wanted to believe it for a long time until you saw the end cinematic of Hellfire Citadel from Patch 6.2 for the first time. (Big fat spoilers starting here and it’s not my fault if you continue reading).

But even after this video became known – Archimonde is defeated and throws Gul’dan into the Nether – the rumor mill was still bubbling for a third major WoD patch. Until Blizzard developer Cory Stockton clarified in an interview with the French website mamytwink.com: “We are no longer planning raids for patch 6.3.” – “But there can still be content patches, even without a raid?” some of you will say. I want to tune into that hopeful canon, I really do.

What’s coming with Patch 6.3?
But the fact of the matter is, for Blizzard, non-raid content patches now consist of Twitter connectivity, costumes for birds to put on their heads, and the introduction of new mini-games that I can play once a month at the Darkmoon Faire. “But patch 6.3 would be an add-on final patch, it has to be way more epic than the patch 6.1 disaster?” Yes, exactly. At least as epic as the great Halion raid at the end of WotLK, this gem of a raid that is still called in one sentence with Uldaman (which means Ulduar, of course – stupid Johann) and Icecrown Citadel (warning, sarcasm!).

I wouldn’t even complain about an add-on that was far too short with far too little content if Warlords of Draenor had gotten round for it. But to be honest: After a furious start and by far the best starting area that an add-on has ever had – I’m talking about you, Tanaan Jungle – things went downhill relatively quickly: the dungeons stagnate on the edge of insignificance, ready at any time to turn into the to plunge into the abyss of total sausageness. The actually exciting quests, in which we want to stop the Iron Horde and track down the escaped Garrosh, culminate in a Thrall vs. Garrosh cutscene in which Blizzard’s worn-out all-purpose weapon grabs the brown orc in a stone fist and then cries around. Excuse the caps, but: COULDN’T YOU, GREEN MONKEY, HAVE DONE THIS AT THE END OF MOP?!

No more orc raids, Blizzard!
Then you decide at Blizzard in the middle of the add-on that the actual end boss Grommash Hellscream isn’t that great after all, because then there would already be an orc as the end boss. They notice that after more than half of all dungeon bosses in WoD are orcs and they recreated the battle for Orgrimmar in red and with trains with the Blackrock Foundry. So you take Gul’dan as the main villain. But wait, he’s also an orc. Then you pull out the old snoring cone Archimonde, who should actually be dead, but somehow he isn’t, because demons never die. You then put it in an orc raid, but it’s not an orc raid – YOU PAINTED IT GREEN, SO IT’S DEMONIC NOW. I’m sorry. Oh, and only 4 out of 13 bosses are orcs (or fat monsters that used to be orcs).

The Summit: We free Grommash from the hands of Gul’dan and his demon buddies. The one like “Thanks, I’ll be right behind you.” and we like “Okidoki.” In the end, the mad warmonger celebrates defeating the demons, along with Yrel from the Dranei Alliance outpost, Durotar from the local Horde association, and everyone makes love. That our green buddy Thrall just killed his son Garrosh (even if he doesn’t know anything about the relatives (he probably knows, you idiot just don’t watch cinematics!) ): No problem. That Grommash tried to invade Azeroth just a few days ago to burn our livestock and eat our homes: It’s okay. We don’t just have good days either.

Mists of Pandaria was the better add-on – deal with it!
Even if many of you skipped Mists of Pandaria and found pandas generally stupid because they were too fluffy – here’s my personal opinion: The story and especially the storytelling of MoP wipe the floor with Warlords of Draenor. Wrathion is three times cooler than Khadgar as a Legendary quest giver. Oh what: eight times! If there was an Oscar for Best Supporting Character in Online Role-Playing Games, Taran Zhu would have them all, and Cordana “I’m here because they wanted to use the Maiev model again” Teufelsang would have a toilet paper roll that said “crybaby.”

For me personally, Warlords of Draenor got off to a great start like no add-on before and in the first two weeks after the start I didn’t even sleep half as much as I should have. And I’ll admit it: I’ve been a huge Garrison fan from day one. But after half a year, in which I practically only flew back and forth between my fortress and the raids, it’s too much for me too. I want to get out. Get out of the garrison, out of Draenor.

Getting Started

All players with an active World of Warcraft subscription or game time on their accounts have access toWoW Classic at no additional cost.

Open the Blizzard Battle.net Desktop App and select World of Warcraft from the menu.
Select World of Warcraft Classic from the Version menu. If you have more than one World of Warcraft account, you’ll see a second Account drop-down list. In this column, select the active account you want to play with.
Click the Install button. The progress bar will tell you when your game is ready to play.
Click the Play button when the installation is complete.

You will need to select the realm you want to play on from several different realm types. Make sure you choose the same realm as your friends – in World of Warcraft Classic, you can only group with characters that are on the same realm as you!
