Do you also have the feeling that Burning Crusade Classic isn’t quite as bad as WoW Classic at launch? And that many players have already given up their Outland adventures or at least paused them? Burning Crusade was always much more popular than vanilla WoW in surveys.
Anyone who regularly listens to our buffedCast knows: In the run-up to the launch of WoW: Burning Crusade Classic, I was sure that the gaming experience in the open world of Outland would be a single shit show for some time if Blizzard didn’t offer completely new TBC Classic servers or makes numerous layers available on all well-populated realms (which wouldn’t be much better either).
In fact, there were phases in which questing in Outland was only partially fun on my server Razorfen. Especially when the developers reduced the number of layers from 7 to 2 before the first weekend, although of course more people had time to gamble then, there was a lot going on on the Hellfire Peninsula. And Razorfen is far from the most popular server in the TBC Classic ecosystem.
However, the situation calmed down much faster than I had anticipated. Queues were only an issue on a few servers for a while. Questing and farming is easy to do on many realms. At the same time, the layers play a smaller role than in WoW (buy now) classic. The possible reason: Burning Crusade Classic seems to attract or inspire fewer players than was the case with WoW Classic. And that’s strange at first glance, after all, the “Burning Crusade Era” always scores significantly better in popularity polls than the vanilla version of WoW ( here’s a sample poll ).
TBC more popular, but …
Don’t get me wrong: Burning Crusade Classic is far from dead. The number of characters actively participating in the TBC Classic PvE endgame is increasing every week. According to Ironforge.pro, four servers are now breaking the 10,000 mark. In total, there are over 300,000 level 70 characters in the US, EU and Russia regions in the PvE endgame of Outland. However, we are still a long way from the top figures from the Classic era – especially on the German-speaking servers. It is questionable whether this can be achieved, as there are more and more players who are already giving up TBC Classic or at least pausing it.
But why is it that WoW Classic, despite its lower popularity, was able to attract more players or inspire them over a longer period of time? I asked around and searched the web for reasons. The following points in particular were repeatedly mentioned:
I didn’t even start with TBC Classic because… you could play the TBC content continuously since 2007. Classic, on the other hand, was fresh because the vanilla version of the world hadn’t been available since the Cataclysm.
I didn’t even start TBC Classic because… I was already playing TBC back then. The time was great, but I don’t have to relive it again. On the other hand, I hadn’t experienced vanilla, so it was exciting for me.
I didn’t even start TBC Classic because… #somechanges like the character boost or the edition with the mount bother me. I am not supporting this by playing TBC Classic.
I quit TBC Classic again because… I’m currently playing WoW patch 9.1.
I quit TBC Classic again because… Phase 1 has nothing more to offer. The raids are done, the attunements are done, the reputation is farmed. I might come back with phase 2.
I quit TBC Classic again because… summer.
I quit TBC Classic again because… I’m done with WoW. I’d rather wait for the new MMOs like Ashes of Creation or New World or try this thing called Final Fantasy 14.
I quit TBC Classic again because… farming honor is way too time consuming right now and without hardening in the arena after a certain rating it’s just frustrating.

World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade
Burning Crusade has the maximum level in WoW at 70 and brings 2 new playable races (Draenei& Blood Elves). In addition, there is a new continent: The Sheol
The Burning Crusade is the first expansion for the successful MMORPG World of Warcraft (WoW) from the developer studio Blizzard. The add-on introduces a new continent called Outland. There are also new races. The Blood Elves for the Horde and the Draenei for the Alliance. The classes Paladin and Shaman are now also playable for both factions. Furthermore, the expansion brings an increase in the level limit from 60 to 70 as well as flying mounts.
World of Warcraft (WoW)
The online role-playing game World of Warcraft (WoW) was released in Europe in 2005 and is an MMO with a subscription payment model. In WoW, players can complete tasks with their characters to improve their hero and meet like-minded players. There are thirteen different races to choose from when selecting a character – six of which belong to only one faction each – as well as eleven classes. In World of Warcraft, players have the opportunity to join the Horde or the Alliance, complete missions and quests with their character in the rich world, and adventure with other heroes in instanced areas for five, ten, and even 25 players. In addition, characters can take up professions, collect pets and mounts, compete against opposing players in battlegrounds and arenas, or simply unwind in the main cities and chat with their guildmates.
