With the newly opened Blackwing Lair raid instance in front of you, you could easily say that Nefarian and Co. are currently the biggest challenges in the PvE area of WoW Classic. But at least our Classic lover Karsten currently sees an even greater challenge in the game, which many guilds will have to nibble on in the coming weeks.
As exciting as the heartbeat finale in the Blackwing Lair of WoW Classic on Thursday was, the race for World First Kills in the new raid instance of the vanilla new edition was just as short: after about 40 minutes, the winners were already certain. And many other guilds and raid groups have already been able to send Nefarian onto the boards in Classic.
Still, business administration isn’t a walk in the park that any guild can successfully complete in an hour or two. This has also been shown by many communities since Thursday, who, despite some preparation and concentrated play, were only able to defeat the first three, four, five opponents in several hours. In other words, the Blackwing Lair is actually significantly heavier than the Molten Core. At the same time, I believe that in WoW (buy now) Classic currently has an even trickier challenge that many guilds will have to nibble on over the next few weeks.
The toughest challenge in PvE
I mean a challenge that existed in Vanilla WoW just as much back then, namely to manage to get 40 motivated players together, raid night after raid night, who pull together with a lot of fun and have the available raid content for weeks or months farm.
This task is particularly challenging in vanilla or classic, because the raid groups here include a whopping 40 players. There were good reasons why Blizzard significantly reduced the size of raids with The Burning Crusade. One of the most important: It is extremely time-consuming to put together and organize such a large raid squad and, due to the constant fluctuation, to constantly find new people.
As far as fluctuation is concerned, it’s no different today than it was in 2005/2006: fellow players suddenly stop playing WoW, some simply don’t come online anymore, others say goodbye nicely and wish the guild only the best. With other guild buddies, real life unexpectedly steps in between: Here, offspring or a new job change the priorities, there someone becomes ill or can no longer find the time to gamble for reasons. And since it’s extremely difficult with so many people in one place to satisfy everyone equally (whether it’s loot distribution, raid participation/replacement bank or things like the desired raid preparation (keyword: consumables)), it always happens It happens again that someone is dissatisfied with changing guilds, being kicked out, or getting involved in attempts by other guilds to poach them.
Business administration exacerbates the situation
The release of the new raid challenge will – I’m sure – noticeably tighten the work of the guild and raid leaders in the coming weeks. For example, there are certainly some Classic players who set themselves the ultimate goal of laying Nefarian and completely mastering Business Administration, and who then fall into a motivation hole and will sooner or later bury their Classic character. Likewise, there will be people who find it too much to play two raids a week and farm consumables for them, for example. Others may be disappointed because business administration is now so easy, and they too are dying. However , if you look at the official Classic forum or the in-game chats, there are already numerous guilds that are more or less aggressively looking for new recruits for their own raid squad almost around the clock. Of course, this is great for players who are just getting into the raid content or who want to reorient themselves. The selection is huge, you can get the best cherry out of the shell. However, guild and raid groups almost have to hope that one or the other competing group will break up in order to then be ready and convince the then homeless heroes to join the guild. Or you just specifically address people from other guilds to make your own community palatable to them.
The latter will continue to increase. Of course, players who have been able to bag remarkable loot are particularly popular – and there are more than enough of those in Blackwing Lair . I just say Dragonfang Talisman, Neltharion’s Tear or Staff of Shadowflame. But also tanks with Thunderfury will automatically be the focus of ambitious guilds that have a tank place in the raid to give away. And if a guild loses players who have received such important loot, that naturally puts a double damper on the good mood.
bleak future
I wish I could tell you now that the situation will eventually calm down again. But I fear the opposite is the case. With the release of the upcoming raids, the time required for currently halfway ambitious groups will increase, which inevitably means that a few people will give up again and again because this effort is too much for them.
At the latest with AQ40 and Naxxramas, the wheat is finally separated from the chaff, because one or the other guild – lulled by the previously very simple content – will notice that after a certain point they can’t go any further. Communities will break as a result, the remaining raids will be happy about the potential reinforcement. Until Kel’thuzad is defeated, there will still be some drama on the servers, and some guild and raid leaders will gain a few gray hairs. But hey, the good news is: all of this is part of the vanilla feeling of the past.

Getting Started
All players with an active World of Warcraft subscription or game time on their accounts have access toWoW Classic at no additional cost.
- Open the Blizzard Battle.net Desktop App and select World of Warcraft from the menu.
- Select World of Warcraft Classic from the Version menu. If you have more than one World of Warcraft account, you’ll see a second Account drop-down list. In this column, select the active account you want to play with.
- Click the Install button. The progress bar will tell you when your game is ready to play.
- Click the Play button when the installation is complete.
You will need to select the realm you want to play on from several different realm types. Make sure you choose the same realm as your friends – in World of Warcraft Classic, you can only group with characters that are on the same realm as you!
