The FIFA Pro shares his top strategies for a good draft team with us – and FIFA Coins are not neglected.
If you’re finding your way around the pitch in FIFA 22, you might want to take a closer look at FUT Draft, as this mode has great reward packs in store for you – if you make it to the end. Draft mode is also a great way to try out new cards and test your skills against competitive opponents.
Pro FIFA player Ryan Pessoa shares his insights on how to get the most out of this FIFA 22 Ultimate Team game mode.

How does FUT Draft work?
“In FUT Draft, you design a team from a single player picks,” Ryan says. “You pick a specific formation from a random set and get a choice of five players for each position. It’s best to put together a team with strong chemistry.”
The biggest difference between this and other modes, such as Division Rivals, is that you’ll have to pay an entry fee. Drafts cost 15000 Coins or 300 FIFA Points – sometimes you can find a FUT Draft token in one of the packs or objectives.
As soon as you have filled the positions in your formation, the team is fixed for the respective draft. After that you can change the positions on the field and use players from the reserves, but the formation and the choice of players will stay the same for the whole draft.
It is possible to play FUT Draft in single player mode, but the rewards are not as good as in online mode. Anyway, you complete 4 matches and the rewards depend on how many matches you win. If you win all 4 matches, you will get the best packs.
How to create the best FUT Draft team
“Putting together a good FUT Draft team is a balancing act,” Ryan admits. “Obviously you want really good players on the field, but if the chemistry isn’t there, they’re unlikely to play up to their potential. Sometimes a compromise is better – pass on Neymar, for example, if a serviceable other player raises the chemistry to 100.”
Choose the right formation for you
Ideally, you’ll be familiar with multiple formations, but often most players stick with one favorite. It’s best to pick the closest formation if yours isn’t among the options. For example, 4-2-2 is a good substitute for 4-4-2.
Start with the attackers
If your focus is on the best attack, it makes sense to fill your FUT Draft team here first and align the rest of the team accordingly. If you have similar players to choose from, give preference to top 5 league and national players, as the rest of the selection can follow suit here.
Be flexible
It’s tempting to switch into tunnel vision when great players appear early for selection. Don’t force yourself into a particular league or nation unless the rest of your selections match up. Worst case scenario, you can still get the star player off the bench after kickoff.
Think about how to play during the draft
Every now and then you should pause for a moment and survey the current state of the draft. Once the first five or six players are set, where would you need to improve? Maybe the Spanish defensive midfielder is a little slow. Don’t try to draft Spanish defenders by hook or crook, as the midfielder may ultimately not make it in the draft.
All the power of chemistry
A team with Neymar or Ronaldo up front will always be dangerous, but they won’t feel as fast and dynamic with low chemistry. Don’t forget that a 100 team gets an extra boost in these regards. So give the 75 nobody a chance and change him when you get a chance during the game.
Don’t hesitate with substitutions
While players fresh off the bench don’t get their full chemistry style bonus, sometimes it’s better to control a 100-chem team that needs 3 substitutions to do so than a 65-chem team with no subs.
Choose Icons and Heroes to increase chemistry.
Icons can connect with any other player, so they also bring players from competing leagues and nations into harmony. FIFA 22 also introduces Hero cards for the first time. These are retired players who spent the peak of their career in a certain league. They are extremely handy since they have a green club link to the current league as well as national players.

The best custom tactics for FUT Draft
“There’s no universal solution for custom tactics in a FIFA game, so you should stick with the old familiar here,” Ryan says. “If you prefer wingers who stalk into the penalty area, you should set that in the menu. It’s annoying to lose games because of factors you can control.”
Admittedly, setting custom tactics is a bit tedious and boring. The menu is sluggish and you have to shimmy from player to player. But it can make a huge difference in your gameplay:
Balanced – Here, the defensive players keep their position during the attacking game, so you don’t get an unpleasant surprise when you lose the ball.
Pressure after ball loss – This way your players will always chase the ball with vigor. Accordingly, the stamina of the players reduces faster, so turn off the function again when you have a lot of game time left.
Forward Runs – If the crosses in the FIFA 22 meta have similar potential as in previous games, then it pays to get your players as far into attacking areas as possible.
Sweeper Keeper – If your goalkeeper doesn’t have the best stats, turn on this option to have him actively defuse crosses and attackers on his own.
How to get the best FUT Draft rewards
“I have to win three or four matches in a FUT Draft run for you to get decent rewards,” Ryan said. “And not even then are you guaranteed to get your coins back. It depends on what cards are high at the time.”
Wait for events that bring FUT Draft token packs, like the summer SBCs.
If you’re not sure you can average three or four matches, hold off on FUT Draft for a while longer and keep an eye on the transfer market. When coveted SBCs are released, golden (normal and rare) cards can reach their double value. So even a mediocre run in FUT Draft can yield a decent return.
