Gengar is currently one of the best Pokémon in Pokémon GO and is the glass cannon par excellence. Why this is so and you should rarely go into battle without the spirit monster, we explain to you here in our quick tip. In addition to the reasons for Gengar’s class, we’ll also go into the best movesets and explain how you can get the most out of Gengar.

If you want to beat your opponents to the ground with massive DPS in Pokémon GO, there is currently only one Pokémon of choice: Gengar. With the right moveset, the Spirit Pokémon has a damage output that is second to none (261 attack power) – even if it is a bit weak on defense (156 defense and 120 stamina). The classic glass cannon.

But why Gengar is currently as strong as we claim, and how you can get the most out of its abilities, we’ll explain now based on a detailed analysis of Pokemongohub. We’ll also tell you which attacks you can use to deal the most damage in arena battles.

Gengar has a large number of useful and sometimes very good attacks. With its Spirit, Unlight, Poison and Fighting attack types, it covers a comprehensive number of attacks that benefit from STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) – if Gengar uses a Spirit or Poison type attack, its damage increases by 25%.

Pokémon GO: Gengar’s Movepool

Gengar can use the following attacks:

Dark Claw (Fast Move) and Haunted Ball (Charge Move) – Spirit type with 23.77 DPS.
Burden (Fast Move) and Spukball (Charge Move) – type spirit with 22,86 DPS
Low Blow (Fast Move) and Spukball (Charge Move) – type Unlicht and Geist with 22,20 DPS
Burden (Fast Move) and Mud Bomb (Charge Move) – Spirit and Poison type with 21.59 DPS
Low Blow (Fast Move) and Mud Bomb (Charge Move) – Unlight and Poison type with 20.94 DPS
Burden (Fast Move) and Focus Blast (Charge Move) – Spirit and Combat type with 19.13 DPS
Low Blow (Fast Move) and Focus Strike (Charge Move) – Unlight and Combat type with 18.57 DPS

In terms of DPS, you’ll do best with the combination of Dark Claw and Haunted Ball. Unfortunately, you can’t get Dark Claw new in the game at the moment, so you may have to switch to other attack combos. Spukball is one of the best attacks in the game, so it should be your charge move of choice. As an alternative to the Dark Claw combo, you’re generally best off with the Burden and Spookball combo.

Otherwise, choose the following movesets depending on the situation:

Attack: Dark Claw/Burden and Haunted Ball
Defense: Burden and Haunted Ball

Pokémon GO: Gengar’s strengths and weaknesses in battle

In battle against other Pokémon, Gengar basically benefits from its dual type Spirit/Poison especially against Pokémon of the Psycho and Spirit types. It also proves effective against Ground and Unlight Pokémon, depending on the moveset. The best way to do this is with the aforementioned attack combination of Dark Claw or Burden and Spookball.

However, the dual Spirit/Poison type also makes Gengar vulnerable to some of the Pokémon it can actually defeat quickly with its attacks. These include the following:

Simsala
Gengar
Mewtu
Psiana
Despotar
Lugia
Guardevoir
Metagross

Overall, Gengar is currently one of the best DPS and Spirit Pokémon in Pokémon GO. According to Pokemongohub, this is only expected to change once the spirit/dragon Pokémon Giratina makes its way into the game with the release of the fourth Pokémon generation. While Giratina has a lower attack power than Gengar (206), it has much better defense (247) and stamina (300).

Still, that’s no reason to mothball Gengar just yet. Because in the raid against Mewtu (with Psycho Blade and Focus Blast), Gengar is your first choice. To take advantage of Gengar’s massive DPS output, use him at the beginning of the fight if possible, when the raid boss is still recharging his energy.

Pokémon Go is the mobile spin-off of Nintendo’s popular Pokémon game series for Android and iOS. It is a so-called “location-based game”, i.e. a game that uses the player’s immediate surroundings. It is based on the principle of augmented reality.

Pokémon Map: Between landmarks and sights

Pokémon Go uses a Global Positioning System (GPS) to determine the player’s location and displays it on a map that also represents the playing field. The map is based on OpenStreetMap maps.
