BACKGROUND
“I’m a diver. We are used to seeing threats through a layer of tempered glass.”
Instead of following the family tradition and studying medicine, Jenson joined the US Navy. His early years as a member of the Boy Scouts and the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps (Blue Angels Squadron) strengthened his desire to serve his country and see the world. Joining the military offered him the ideal opportunity to pursue an academic education while also learning a variety of skills that fueled his adventurous spirit. After his first military deployment, Jenson focused on the US Navy SEALs as his ultimate career goal. Driven by a hunger for success, both professionally and privately, he has climbed Mount Everest, participated in American sailing championships and sailed around the world several times.

Specialist Craig “Blackbeard” Jenson is an engaging personality with a boisterous sense of humor and a booming laugh. Outside of his assignments, Jenson doesn’t seem to take too many things seriously. He was relaxed and open throughout our conversation, describing himself as a “gung-ho guy who doesn’t do things by halves.” Admittedly, I don’t often hear “gung-ho” as a paraphrase for “bravado”.
Jenson is athletic, strong and a mountaineer and competitive sailor. By his own admission, he feels most comfortable in nature. He says the wilderness drives him to adapt and encourages willpower, tolerance, and acceptance. He seems to have harbored these thoughts since his youth. I asked him if there was any job he could imagine doing when he wasn’t in the military. He replied that he had considered becoming an oceanographer, but “still takes great pride in being a SEAL.”
I asked him when he discovered the adventurer in himself. At the age of five, he snuck out of bed and lugged all of his family’s camping gear into the woods behind his house. He camped there for two days before returning so his parents wouldn’t worry. He later learned that they knew his exact whereabouts and were keeping an eye on him. He regrets not staying out longer. He says that one day his great-grandfather quit his job and left his wife and children to go north and become a gold digger. According to Jenson, he shares this passion for discovery, but he has no interest in leaving his own wife and children.
Modern day piracy is a serious problem for the Navy, and Jenson has served on several anti-piracy task forces. Nevertheless, he likes to play saber-rattling pirates with his children at home. Jenson says pirates were egalitarian and acted similarly to what a Rainbow team would do in the field. […] He is a reliable operator who has a clear picture of his role. He practices it successfully and is popular in his team. If he wants to play pirates in his free time, he should enjoy this fun.
