BACKGROUND
“Kyūdō is meditative action. Explosions are part of that action.”
Imagawa is an expert in paramilitary techniques and the infiltration of high-risk areas who demonstrates excellent leadership skills in the field. Encouraged by her family, she began to practice long-distance kyūdō as a child. She is able to assess multiple factors simultaneously while performing precise, controlled, and fluid movements. Having trained with counter-terrorist units from around the world, including SAS, FBI SWAT and GIGN, Hibana has a rare tactical flexibility and is particularly adept at attacks in transit (bus, train and plane). During her training at the National Police Academy, she was nicknamed Hibana due to her improvised explosive devices. Imagawa speaks multiple languages fluently and is skilled with all weapons. As a result, she was recruited by the Aichi Prefectural Police Department’s Special Assault Team, where she quickly made a career for herself thanks to her diverse techniques and charisma.
PSYCHOLOGICAL REPORT
Specialist Yumiko “Hibana” Imagawa has considerable talents. I hardly know anyone who has been praised so often. She finds it easy to inspire multi-cultural Operators and reassure people, and endures my pathetic attempts at speaking Japanese with benevolence.
I enjoy our conversations. Imagawa speaks very enthusiastically about her experiences. Although she has traveled the world and experienced so many cultures, her favorite story is about her childhood home. For example, Imigawa tells how her mother wouldn’t let her father, a butcher, in the house after work until they had hosed him down in the garden. The family was amused by the soaked, barefoot father jumping back and forth in the icy jet of water. I like the story.
Memories like that keep us grounded, and I wondered if she owed that appreciation to kyūdō training. When I commented that she exudes an inner calm, she laughed and called me a “hippie”. I would be interested to know if she manages to inspire some of the other operators to stay calm inside as well. Her joint training with so many anti-terrorist units makes her ideally suited for this role. At Rainbow, Imagawa is already respected by everyone.
I sense that Imagawa’s motivation is fueled by an inner fire, but she also sees her competing against other Operators. The reports from the post-deployment briefings suggest so. Imagawa seems unusually impatient with Specialist Grace “Dokkaebi” Nam, even though they often work together in the lab.
This dynamic surprises me because I have trouble categorizing it. When I asked Imagawa about it, she said I was wrong and Dokkaebi doesn’t seem to notice or care. I’ve looked at the reports and suspect that something must have happened during a joint exercise with the GIGN. Perhaps Imagawa envies Nam’s self-confidence, which would be consistent with records of Imagawa’s younger sister. Nevertheless, I would like to examine this question in more detail. They’re not necessarily at odds with each other, but if I don’t find out what’s rattling Imagawa, it could have unpredictable consequences in future operations.
