When Flament ended up in hospital due to his rebellious antics, was rejected by his family and was at risk of becoming homeless, he enlisted in the French armed forces in an attempt to regain control of his life. Early reports noted that Flament’s skills and talents lend themselves well to specialized CBRN training. With the added structure and strict discipline during advanced training, he thrived and excelled. A short time later he was recruited by the 2e régiment de dragons, where he worked primarily with sensors for environmental surveillance.
Flament was fascinated by bacteriology and virology, especially quarantine control. Realizing that his skills would be better off elsewhere, he resigned from the army and joined the gendarmerie because he was interested in the GIGN’s FAO. His ability to stay focused and perform precise tasks under stress caught the attention of Specialist Melnikova during a joint mission in Nigeria, who recommended him as a candidate for Rainbow.
PSYCHOLOGICAL REPORT
Scar. Some of our operators have more than enough of them. But Specialist Olivier “Lion” Flament used the army to heal his own. There’s no perfect outlet, and Battle Fatigue likes to pile up, but he turns his frustration into determination. His approach is based on an extremely strong focus that makes him one of our more impressive and enduring team members.
The value of self-examination is one of the things I try to instill in the team. As a Catholic, Flament already understands him. He is open about the things he regrets and I can see that it gives him clarity and purpose. He has neither forgotten nor tried to erase his past. She motivates him, but doesn’t have him under control.
In our sessions, I ask about something good that has happened to my partner recently, no matter how small. Some then describe their wonderful breakfast or the movie that made them cry tears of laughter. Flament talks about his love for heavy metal, his faith and his son.
Though the pain of his father’s abandonment may never fully go away, it has inspired Flament to be more constructive about his own son. He cherishes their relationship, perhaps because he realizes he almost never met Alexis. From the pictures Flament shows me, I can see that his efforts have paid off.
Three of our GIGN operators – Special Forces Emmanuelle “Twitch” Pichon, Gustave “Doc” Kateb and Flament – are burdened by a shared tragedy. The tensions that arose because Flament quarantined doctors and nurses who later died must be resolved. Joint sessions with Kateb and Flament are already planned. We will settle this matter one way or another.
Flament tells me he’s reinvented himself thanks to his military service – but it sounds like he’s a different person now. I think he went through more of a transformation. A dedicated operator, a tireless volunteer…a loving father. He always was. His tattoo – “Give me the means and I will shine,” a slogan of the French army – is emblematic of Flament’s story. In order to continue growing, he must accept that he has the ability to change.
