BACKGROUND
“The devil is in the details… and I love details”.
Born in Boston, Erik Thorn grew up in a multilingual home and ranks in the top 2% of the population when it comes to intelligence. After graduating from school, he enlisted in the US Army and was promoted several times within a short period of time. He learned Dari and became an intelligence officer. He served in Kabul when there were many foreign reporters, adventurers and criminals there. Thorn was a force in underground circles and known to locals as a skilled buzkaschi player.
The unit recruited Thorn as their regional specialist. He stayed in Afghanistan, gathering intel, building a network of allies and safe havens, and tracking down enemies. As the situation in Kabul worsened, Thorn kept an eye on the Americans there and rescued them if necessary. He also helped local people who were threatened to flee the violence. When the unit lost contact with him, he was searching for a missing reporter. After two years of radio silence, he reappeared with enough information to prevent a large-scale insurgent operation. Questions continued about his disappearance, but he was exonerated and his testimony was sealed. His successful missions and expertise earned him the attention of Six.
PSYCHOLOGICAL REPORT
I knew Specialist Erik “Maverick” Thorn well before he disappeared. He was a legend among intelligence informants – “the ghost that disappeared”. Dealing with him is not always easy because he is extremely intelligent and sees through others completely. When it comes to Kabul or Buzkaschi, however, he can hardly hold back.
I’ve never seen old men on street corners offering their services as love letter writers. So it’s no wonder that it brought him to Afghanistan… A fascinating culture. When western expats began partying in underground clubs and letting loose in restaurants, Specialist Thorn knew the potential for danger and that these westerners made easy targets. He saw the ominous signs before anyone else.
Since childhood, Specialist Thorn has had to process an overwhelming amount of sensory input that would have broken many other children. Instead, he organized and deconstructed everything around him until only functions remained. That’s probably why he’s holding back his feelings.His parents were loving but strict at the same time. He was hardly allowed to move about freely in his own neighborhood. That’s why he joined the army to explore a world he’d only dreamed of. It is not surprising that Kabul had such a strong influence on him. He only came out of himself when he began to travel. Even now his spirit is with us but his heart is still in Kabul.
Specialist Thorn has demonstrated remarkable empathy, which stems from his skills of observation and analysis. People confide in him, so he was able to survive in Kabul as a “little mouse”. The reports of his disappearance continue to concern me. It reads like a terrifying thriller, but the scars left by the experience have only strengthened his connection with Afghanistan. His tattoo probably serves as a reminder of this life.
