BACKGROUND
“Mess with someone your own size.”
Thorn grew up on a farm in a part of Ireland known for two things: horse racing and army training. When she wasn’t beating up one of her four older brothers, she was helping her parents breed and raise thoroughbreds for the racetrack and the Irish Mounted Police. It’s a family tradition for the Hawthorns to serve in the armed forces to take a “breather” from country life. But Thorn was drawn to horses, which is why she joined the Garda Síochána.
After four years of impeccable service, she applied for the Garda’s elite tactical unit, the Emergency Response Unit. Only five percent of applicants make it through the grueling two-week entrance exam. Thorn not only graduated at the top of her class, but also helped other applicants complete the training.
She quickly rose through the ranks as a tactical weapons expert and helped redesign the unit’s obstacle course after calling it “a piece of cake.” Caveira got wind of her course. She barely made it and then asked Thorn, quite out of breath, “Do you need a job?”

If you ever want to feel physically unfit, shake hands with a farmer. At least that’s how I felt when I first met Specialist Brianna “Thorn” Skehan. In that brief moment, I felt a lifetime of hard work, discipline, tremendous strength and total control. I knew immediately that she would be a perfect fit for us.
As someone who grew up on a farm, Brianna had to fight for attention – and everything else. Her parents were too busy and left most of her upbringing to her brothers. She may have been teased when she was little – but that stopped the day she broke her oldest brother’s nose. She has a strong sense of justice and does not tolerate bullying
When we talked about her decision to go to the police, she mentioned – somewhat hesitantly – an incident involving her youngest brother, Liam. His numerous vices took him to the racetrack, whereupon he got involved with members of organized crime. One night he took these people to the farm, where they burned down a stable and killed all the championship horses inside. Brianna went to the Garda Síochána the very next day and never saw Liam again.
Brianna likes to cover serious issues with humor and is quick to suppress her feelings. Her brothers see signs of vulnerability as weakness, which reinforces her perfectionism, competitiveness, and ruthlessness on the job.
Brianna has an attractive personality. She gets along with everyone and makes people feel good with her stories. She’s up and working out before most of our specialists even open their eyes, and lately Sledge has been taking her for a morning jog. When I asked her if her past distracted her, she replied with a laugh, “Only fools get distracted by the past.” I was tempted to tell her that my job would be redundant if that were indeed the case.
