when rubber boots were still made of wood, there was no support for World of Warcraft at first, later at least a few addons. In the meantime, there are addons for addons and so on. But which of them do you absolutely have to use? Which ones are rather nice extras that you could do without?
We go back to the time of the release of World of Warcraft (buy now). A dashing night elf and a grim dwarf with a shotgun look at you from the CD box. The elf as if to invite you home. The dwarf like you should dare to do it while he’s there.
After the installation we went to the character creation, where we spent half the day, only to finally press the “Random” button – we want to look around first. Loading screen, cutscene and bang – you’re standing in the starting area of your race, an NPC with a yellow exclamation mark over his head next to you. And then it started – with the odyssey, because the quest text had to be read to get any information where to go. There was no addon like QuestHelper or Carbonite to show you where to go.
If you wanted to look for something in your pocket, it was an advantage to know which pocket you actually had it in. Because it already took on similar traits as at a supermarket checkout, where an elderly lady wants to pay appropriately. Bag open, head in, five minutes afk to find the right item to swap with the other player. That’s what Bagnon and co. are for now, all items are color-coded according to their rarity and neatly sorted with a click if desired.
World of Warcraft: Tidy interface, or UI mess?
Even when it came to general playability, back then Vanilla had what Vanilla had to offer: basic settings. You had your action bars at the bottom, on the side, and that was it. Not everything was rosy back then. With addons, it got better, more personal, because you could put your own stamp on a game that already had a lot of options – in terms of gameplay – and give it more personality.
With XPERL, Grid, Bartender and Pit Bull, action bars and individual elements were moved around, so sometimes you spent more time setting up the interface than actually playing the game. However, what came out then with some users should rather be banned.
But in the meantime, it doesn’t matter whether you’re an interface messie or a tidying fanatic, a full bag or a lost adventurer: there are a few addons that simply have to be there. In our editorial office, for example, it looks like this in the addon folder:

” I actually only have Auctionator (because I’m lazy) and Bartender – because two action bars at the bottom of the screen aren’t enough for me. But add-ons for treasures are also handy. But I’m thrifty there, don’t need much, because meanwhile the standard WoW interface is actually fine too. “
Judith :
” DBM, so my screen lights up when I’m standing in the porridge. Bartender, so I can arrange all the buttons clearly on my mini-laptop display. And Grid for the healer in me. “
Sara :
” I have Auctionator and Gatherer. Oh, and Bagnon too, the bags are so annoying in WoW. “
The writer of these lines is completely disoriented and gets lost between the fridge and the toilet, which is why you can always find navigation addons with him. Preferably carbonite. But the interface itself is also being tinkered with. For years it had to be Roth UI to push the “diabloization”, now it’s ElvUI. But also Bagnon and DBM are a must.

What is WoW Classic?
World of Warcraft Classic is a true recreation of the original WoW as you know it from 2006. All parts of the game – from combat mechanics and talent trees to character models and zones – have been recreated, contributing to the authentic experience.
Getting Started
All players with an active World of Warcraft subscription or game time on their accounts have access toWoW Classic at no additional cost.
- Open the Blizzard Battle.net Desktop App and select World of Warcraft from the menu.
- Select World of Warcraft Classic from the Version menu. If you have more than one World of Warcraft account, you’ll see a second Account drop-down list. In this column, select the active account you want to play with.
- Click the Install button. The progress bar will tell you when your game is ready to play.
- Click the Play button when the installation is complete.
You will need to select the realm you want to play on from several different realm types. Make sure you choose the same realm as your friends – in World of Warcraft Classic, you can only group with characters that are on the same realm as you!
