Specialist Azucena Rocío “Amaru” Quispe began her career as an anthropologist dedicated to protecting Peru’s cultural heritage. Her unique family connection to the colonial explorers of the early 20th century made her acutely aware of how voyages of discovery can shape cultural awareness and the profound and enduring loss when important cultural treasures are lost. She served in the Policía Nacional del Perú (PNP) for several years before reorienting herself as a freelance archaeologist, focusing on the discovery and categorization of new archaeological sites. After several encounters with antique smugglers and failed attempts to break them up from the inside, she turned to guerrilla tactics, to capture important cultural discoveries for the Peruvian state. When Specialist César “Goyo” Ruiz Hernández brought her presence to our attention, she had already spent 20 years in the jungles of Peru fighting the cartels in her own way.
PSYCHOLOGICAL REPORT
Specialist Azucena Rocío “Amaru” Quispe’s self-awareness is amazing. Especially in terms of the things that motivate them. Loss is not uncommon for an operator to thrive, but it’s rare to see losses this frequent and in such rapid succession.
She learned from childhood to feel at home in the jungle. Her family ties formed the basis of a difficult childhood. While she has had many friendly rivalries with her siblings and cousins, her grandmother’s hope is what she speaks of most fondly. From what I understand, her grandfather disappeared almost a century ago on an expedition to a lost city. Details suggest he traveled with Percy Fawcett, although confirmation is unavailable. And yet Quispe’s grandmother always believed that her father would return. I suspect that even long after Kantuta’s death, Quispe still harbors the same fairytale hope of an eventual reunion.
Quispe’s strength lies in her unusual mixture of realism and good nature. She is not afraid to laugh at the pitfalls that life throws at her. However, she confided in me that she is increasingly “suffering” from the ongoing unrest in her home country. First of all, she is obsessed with a deep and abiding love for Peru. […] I would never accuse Quispe of being sentimental. Because their interest in preserving their culture is far more venal than most would believe.
The bond between Quispe and Specialist César “Goyo” Ruiz Hernández is obviously valued by both. I suspect she only accepted the offer to join Rainbow to spend time with him. However, she actually believed that she would soon end up back in the Amazon basin. Rather, she is looking for tools that can help her personally. But what she can teach us is of great importance for the future of this unit. Without her, we will be forced to fight the same forces she has avoided for the last 20 years.
In any case, due to her sociability, she quickly integrated into the group of other operators. Now we just have to convince her that this is where she can make the most difference. And this task falls to me.
